Event is part of Spirit Week

Blair's SGA announced today that it will conduct a celebration of Blair's diversity during both lunches on Monday, Feb. 13. The event termed "Mix it Up," encourages students to sit with people they may not know and make connections with them.

"During lunch, we will encourage people to switch seats and talk to people they normally don't," said SGA senior advisor Soulyana Lakew. The event is intended to fight cultural prejudices and increase Blazers' awareness of other cultures.

The event coincides with the first day of Spirit Week, which the SGA has announced will be "cultural day" — another celebration of Blair's diversity. "It's basically a huge diversity workshop, with everyone at lunch taking part," said SGA president Barun Aryal

The event will be promoted by several InfoFlow announcements, as well as by word of mouth. "SGA asked several students to encourage their friends to participate," said Lakew.

Blair is one of Montgomery County's most diverse high schools. Blair's student body is 31.8 percent African-American, 27.2 percent white, 26 percent Hispanic and 14.8 percent Asian, according to MCPS reports. Aryal believes that Blair's diversity will contribute to the success of "Mix it Up." "Blair is a very diverse school, and I think it would be an enriching experience for students to reach out and learn from their fellow Blazers," he said.
