Girls finish 2nd, 5th at state meet
NOV 9, HAVERFORD HIGH SCHOOL-
Freshman Halsey and Ashlyn Sinclair represented Blair cross country well at the final event of the season, taking the second and fifth spots at the Maryland Cross-County State Championship at Haverford High on Saturday, November 8.
Halsey finished with a time of 19:36, and Ashlyn finished in 20:00. Coach Angelique Bosse commended their efforts. "Considering that it was the first time they ran the course, and all the pressure of being in a state meet, they had an outstanding performance. They ran an excellent race," she said.
The course was the most difficult the girls have competed on, with many hills that drained runners early and often. The girls ran with the strategy of running the first mile slower than normal. Bosse explained that the strategy worked.
"After the first part of the course, there were about 10-12 runners ahead of them. When they later came out of a forest, Halsey and Ashlyn had passed several people, and Halsey was in second," she explained. "They ran a very smart race," she noted.
Bosse felt like the girls might have done better if they had more experience with the course. Since the Bull Run Invitational, which is at the same location, was rained out, the girls had no practice running the hilly trail.
