The perfect bromance

"30 Minutes or Less" is 83 minutes of "bro" bonding time. Just like the 2009 hit "I Love You, Man," it is an action and comedy packed film that defines the age old importance of friendship between men.

Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), a pizza delivery boy, works for a diner that advertises pizza delivery in thirty minutes or less. If they don't meet that deadline, the pizza is free. One day Nick delivers a pizza to an unusual venue, a junkyard. While attempting to make his delivery, Nick is cornered by Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson), who ordered the pizza so they could get Nick to rob a bank. To make sure he goes through with the plan, Dwayne and Travis strap a bomb to his chest. You know what they say, if you want something illegal done, get someone else to do it. Throughout the movie, Nick and his best friend Chet (Aziz Ansari) try their best to rob the bank without getting blown up.

"30 Minutes or Less" is hard to categorize; it has a fantastic combination of both action and comedy, with a hint of romance. The only genre it fits in perfectly is a "bromantic" comedy. Although this movie might be written off as just another male-centric comedy, it explores a subculture that is just beginning to be defined by Hollywood: the friendship between two guys. In today's society of masculine driven media, many might think that showing affection between best guy friends may be emasculating, but this movie flips that paradigm onto its side. "30 Minutes or Less" is more than a movie about two guys trying rob a bank, it is one that fully embraces the idea of "bro-to-bro" friendship.

One of the great things about "30 Minutes or Less” is its fresh, new cast. One of these new faces is Ansari, who is well known for his role as Tom Haverford on "Parks and Recreation". Initially, he came off a bit inexperienced and awkward to watch, but as the film progresses, he grows into his character. This trend seems to affect the movie as a whole as well. It takes a while for the plot to develop before viewers get a feel for each of the characters, who then make the movie absolutely hilarious. It is actually a bit surprising that despite the film's heavily comedian cast, initially the movie is not very funny.

Beyond the movie's eventual comedic value, there were also a number of action scenes that were fantastically captured by the director. The film's premise may be simple, but like any other action movie there are a few twists in the plot, which were incorporated flawlessly with the movie's humorous and emotional aspects. For fans of "I Love you, Man" and Eisenberg's hit "Adventureland," "30 Minutes or Less" fuses comedy, action and "bromance" into a summer flick that, like Nick, delivers.
