Track ready for a fast start

Coming off successful indoor and cross-country seasons, the spring track and field team looks promising. Thanks to this year's newcomers, freshmen twins Ashlyn and Halsey Sinclair, the girls' team has the potential to sweep the division, Counties and Regionals.

According to distance coach Carl Lewin, the Sinclair twins guarantee the team points, but these scores may not be enough to compensate for the teams' weaknesses in other areas. Last year's graduation took co-captain Colby Chapman, who competed in the 4x100m, 4x200m, long jump and triple jump at the state level last season. The girls' team needs new runners to step up in these events, says Lewin.

The boys team also lost strong competitors from sprinting and field events, notably sprinters Briand Djenodjilem and Cedrick Mack, jumper Avon Jackson and discus and shotput thrower Max Pollock. Last season, with a record of 4-1, the Blazer boys came closer to winning their division than they had in the past four years.

However, last year's success bumped the team up two divisions, creating an extremely challenging schedule for the team despite talented new sprinters and strong returning distance runners, according to senior co-captain Matt Sheldon.

The first meet is at Poolesville on March 30 at 3:30 p.m.
