"World War Z:" a New Type of War

By Rohan Oprisko | June 23, 2013, midnight | In Movies »

Despite the previews demonstrating only signs of mass violence and destruction, the $200 million dollar apocalyptic blockbuster "World War Z" is not only action-packed but also touches base with many current issues such as global warming, the spreading of diseases and geopolitical conflicts. Similar to other popular zombie flicks, the film focuses on society's struggle to stay alive and the steps that are taken to ensure the survival of humankind. However, unlike other common blockbusters, there were not a force of evil or grand battles to end the film, just a general problem and a search for a solution.

No Ordinary "Internship"

By Zoe Johnson | June 12, 2013, 2:13 p.m. | In Movies »

In "The Internship," the reality of unemployment and the need for a happy ending that could only happen in the movies collide when two jobless salesmen find themselves lacking skills that can help them in the digital age.

"Oblivion" fails to obliterate

By Jack Estrin | April 28, 2013, 4:25 a.m. | In Movies »

"Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski is back with another sci-fi film, but unfortunately the product is abysmal and mediocre. Although the film has ample star power with versatile actors such as Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise, Oblivion simply lacks any kind of "wow" factor.

"Oz" never ceases to amaze

By Lily Gates | March 12, 2013, 8:54 p.m. | In Movies »

Prepare to be transported to Oz once again, but don't be surprised if the Merry Old Land of Oz isn't as merry as you once remembered. The journey along the Yellow Brick Road may seem much darker as director Sam Raimi's prequel "Oz the Great and Powerful" reveals the story of that man behind the curtain that we were instructed to pay no attention to in the original.

"Dark Skies" for the horror genre

By Melissa Arias, Caroline Gabriel | Feb. 26, 2013, 12:08 a.m. | In Movies »

The creators of "Dark Skies" were most likely in the dark when directing this movie. The storyline was predictably unoriginal, the villainous creatures were underdeveloped and the actors were not believable. Overall, what could be taken from this "horror"ible excuse of a movie is that if you're experiencing random breaks in, being possessed, and getting random nosebleeds… it's probably aliens.

This franchise needs to "Die Hard"

By Richard Chen | Feb. 23, 2013, 3:20 p.m. | In Movies »

Don't be fooled by the title of this movie – you can watch "A Good Day to Die Hard" on any day of the week and it will devoid you of any pleasure and leave you feeling miserable and empty. Directed by John Moore, it betrays everything that made the original "Die Hard" so exciting and invigorating.

Zombilicious

By Melissa Arias | Feb. 5, 2013, 9:06 p.m. | In Movies »

Directed and written by Jonathan Levine, "Warm Bodies" is one of the strangest interpretations of the classic tale of "Romeo and Juliet,” but also one of the most memorable and less cheesy versions I have seen. The movie does have its cheesy moments, but it's overshadowed by the comedic moments and the interesting juxtaposition between zombie-horror and romance.

Method, not madness

By Aanchal Johri | Dec. 26, 2012, 4:48 p.m. | In Movies »

Just when you thought Les Miserables couldn't get more perfect in Blair drama teacher Kelly O' Connor's vision of the classical French novel, director Tom Hooper's version sets the bar even higher. Les Misérables, one of the most anticipated movies of 2012, exceeds all of its expectations.

Breaking Dawn: Ending the Twilight Saga with a burst of sunshine

By Janvi Raichura | Nov. 19, 2012, 7:22 p.m. | In Movies »

Even with the excessive blood bath throughout "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," the movie was surprisingly enjoyable, and it was a bloody good end to the Twilight Saga.

Agent 007 is back in action, this time with the reputation of MI6 at stake. Directed by Sam Mendes, "Skyfall" is one of the best James Bond films to date, with high octane motor chases, witty dialogue and a very satisfying plot twist that will excite most fans.

Ralph did not "Wreck-it"

"Wreck-it Ralph" has a refreshingly unique story line that takes video games to a whole new level.

All "Perks," no problems

By Sarika Ramaswamy | Oct. 1, 2012, 8:12 p.m. | In Movies »

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" transforms you from a wallflower into one of the "misfit toys" that befriend Charlie (Logan Lerman) in this different, darker take on the classic coming-of-age story.

This picture is not worth a thousand "Words"

By Grace Hill | Sept. 10, 2012, 6:08 p.m. | In Movies »

Despite stellar acting from an easily recognizable cast, the poor storyline of "The Words" weakens the film and keeps it from pacing naturally.

"The Apparition" makes fleeting impact

By Lily Gates | Aug. 27, 2012, 3:25 a.m. | In Movies »

Although Tom Felton is in "The Apparition," you'll wish you had a portkey from "Harry Potter" so you can apparate away from this terrible movie.

"The Expendables 2" is spent

By Emma Yeager | Aug. 21, 2012, 10:28 a.m. | In Movies »

Though "The Expendables 2" appears to have it all – an all-star cast and a big budget for explosions – the movie succumbs to the run-of-the-mill with dull one-liners and an out-dated plot.

"Legacy" lives up to predecessors

By Sam Lewando | Aug. 13, 2012, 10:24 p.m. | In Movies »

Despite taking on a larger role in the "Bourne" franchise, director and writer Tony Gilroy, who also co-wrote the first three films, manages to create a very cohesive storyline that bridges the five-year gap from the original "Bourne" trilogy very well. "The Bourne Legacy" serves as not just an extension of Jason Bourne's story, but also offers a different perspective on the contents of the trilogy.

A "Revolution" worth witnessing

By Urvi Banerjee | July 31, 2012, 1:33 p.m. | In Movies »

With its captivating choreography, awe-inspiring effects and heartfelt acting, "Step Up Revolution" promises to stun existing fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. Although the film echoes the storylines of previous installments, the more grown-up feel of this movie and its featured type of dancing—flash mobs—brings something new to the mix.

The Dark Knight (Surp)rises

By Aanchal Johri | July 21, 2012, 1:37 a.m. | In Movies »

If Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy was a novel, the entire final movie would be the stifling climax. From a somber start to a gripping end, award winning director Christopher Nolan promises that as the Dark Knight rises, so will the hair on the back of your neck.

Much to like about "People Like Us"

By Grace Hill | July 8, 2012, 1:08 a.m. | In Movies »

DreamWorks Studios produced the drama "People Like Us" on a relatively small scale, with a budget of only 16 million dollars, and in some ways it feels like an indie movie. Despite its convoluted storyline and star-studded cast, the movie has realistic characters with complex personalities and expressed a heartfelt message about family relationships.

An impressive, "Brave" heroine

By Sarika Ramaswamy | June 24, 2012, 7:57 p.m. | In Movies »

Pixar bravely introduces a host of firsts, including its first fairytale and its first heroine in its new animated hit, "Brave." Following in the trend of shying away from the classic damsel-in-distress, the movie's independent and fierce princess immediately promises a very different fairytale with unique characters that moviegoers have come to expect from Pixar.

"Rock of Ages" fails to rock

By Melissa Arias | June 21, 2012, 1:52 a.m. | In Movies »

With random outbursts of old rock songs and a disarray of unclear storylines, there is not a defined plot in "Rock of Ages," but the theme, however, of true love and immortalizing rock music is actually inspirational.

Mad for Madagascar

By Caroline Gabriel | June 9, 2012, 11:36 p.m. | In Movies »

For those who only saw the preview of "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and thought it was just going to be another children's movie, think again. In reality, the previews did not do the movie justice as the film's many humorous moments are surprisingly quite the opposite of the typical juvenile comedy.
