(Dis)Honor Societies

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that recognizes students for their academic achievements, dedication to community service and excellence in leadership and character. Blair and the other 13,000 chapters are supposed to help students develop each of these qualities. However, students largely apply for the boost it gives their resumes, not because they care about growing as a person.

Where is the honor?

Some aspects of national honors societies are beneficial, such as their tutoring and community service chapters. However, the positive qualities of these societies, to many students, are not the deciding factor for joining. For most, it's the way the words "honor society" looks.

National Honor Society undergoes changes

This year, Blair's National Honor Society (NHS) implemented major changes pertaining to both its application process and club requirements. NHS began admitting sophomores this school year, raised the required number of Student Service Learning (SSL) hours earned in the program and became an official member of the National Chapter of Honor Societies.
