SilverChic: the best of the best prom dresses

by Stacy Mathew, Online Opinions and Features Editor
Lady Blazers graced the dance floor this past Saturday for the Junior-Senior Prom. Many girls have been dreaming about Prom since the beginning of freshman year, wondering who they'll take, what group they'll be in, how they'll do their hair and most importantly...what they'll wear. For all those who did not attend prom or those who want to relive it, SilverChic looks back on the most beautiful styles of the night.

Boho-chic

Senior Nafisa Ahmed stunned her peers in a floor-length, champagne-colored gown with simple bead designs all over. The dress defined her body by gathering at her waist and then flowing back to the ground. Ahmed stayed away from the flashy bracelets and necklaces and chose to go with simple accessories: some earrings and a clutch. "I felt like the dress fit my personality," Ahmed said. "I wanted to do something bohemian and chic, and I thought the dress fit both those characteristics."

All of the glitz
Senior Mahlet Belay shined through the crowd in a dark cream-colored dress, covered with a net of beaded flower designs. Mahlet opted away from the typical French manicure, going with a deep burgundy nail color instead, and brought attention to her face with gold dangling earrings. "This dress made me feel beautiful and it represents who I am," Belay said. She also had a "smoky eye" look, which really brought attention to her eyes and smile.

Simple and elegant
Senior Rebecca Arbacher wore a dark blue, floor-length gown that draped in the front and had a deep v-neck. The dress was just enough for Arbacher to have the perfect look for prom without overdoing it and also made her body look slim and tall. The deep blue color of the dress brought out the blue in her eyes, which contrasted sharply with her dark hair, all adding beauty to her overall look for prom. Arbacher needed no extra jewelry in order to stand out because her dress did all the work.

Trading Jordans for heels
Senior Morgan Chase, a varsity basketball player for four years, traded in her sneakers for heels on prom night. Chase's dress was a one shoulder, light gold, floor-length gown, which was accompanied by gold heels, a champagne-colored clutch, a diamond bracelet and dangling, diamond earrings. Her subtle makeup complimented her glamorous dress, and her skin looked radiant against the champagne color.

Bring in the ball gown

Senior Sally Barth brought a unique style to prom in a blue ball gown with peacock designs over the corset of the dress. "I always knew I would want a ball gown because I'm kind of a princess at heart," Barth said, laughing. "I came across this dress and decided to try it on as a joke," she said. "However, I was surprised to find that it was flattering and different without being tacky or tweeny." Barth's updo hairstyle brought attention to the ball gown as well as her brown clutch that contrasted with the dress. "Our photographer and the teachers at prom kept telling me it stood out, and I guess that's one of the things that drew me to it, but really it was about being able to feel like a princess for one night in my life," Barth said.

All of the ladies looked stunning at prom and were (hopefully) able to have an amazing last dance as a Blazer. As the seniors anxiously wait for graduation, we at SCO hope they continue to pick beautiful dresses for every formal occasion they attend.

What exactly is so "ridiculous" about it?

If you are going to write a review on what everyone wore to prom, show pictures for each person

when a tech site writes an article comparing touch screen on different phones, they include pictures for all phones, not just the ones that stood out

Describing what the dress looks like doesnt help if we dont know what it looks like

There were more than a hundred people who went, it's only appropriate to show the ones that stood out the most, obvi. She only wrote about five dresses, so why would she show pictures for more than those five?

The premise of this article is weird- critiquing girls on their attire for prom night? It approaches an eerie sort of vibe as you consider that this article is essentially rating girls on their appearance. Talking about girls' bodies and focusing on what they're wearing only perpetuates the sexist sentiment that girls are things of beauty to be objectified and praised for the way they look. It's pageantry, and it's shallow. This could have been written in a way so that it wouldn't bring to mind such negative connotations- aren't fashion pieces supposed to be about the clothes themselves? And why are boys excluded from being acknowledged? Where this article could have been a fun prom fashion piece, it struck all the wrong chords.

Part of fashion is HOW you wear the dress. When choosing dresses, it does matter how the dress looks on your specific body. And guys werent included because the title of the article is PROM DRESSES. Also, most guys look pretty generic at prom.

All together greatly written but a horrible unnecessary topic that shouldn't exist just delete it

some of these don't really stand out so it's kind of silly. morgan looked stunning, but there was nothing different, unique, or stand-out-ish about her dress. and mahlet and nafsia, though written about for completely different styles, had very similar dresses.
