Super Bowl: Funny car commercials? Who knew?

Notwithstanding the 34-minute power outage, Sunday's Super Bowl was the third-most watched telecast in United States history, with an average of 108.4 million viewers. As an adamant football fan, I really was watching for the football game and not to see fifteen Beyoncés dancing in perfect rhythm, although that was pretty impressive as well. And despite the increasingly-interesting game, during every break in play, I couldn't help but watch and listen a little harder as this year's batch of much-anticipated Super Bowl commercials rolled out.

In past years the top commercials have been primarily for snacks, drinks and ETrade, but this year the spotlight shone brightest on an unforeseen group. While the Doritos and Bud Light commercials were still present, as was our favorite investment-promoting talking baby, it was the car commercials that stole the show this year. While always present, these have been historically the least funny commercials, recently highlighted by GEICO ads featuring Maxwell the annoying pig. However, Super Bowl XLVII may go down in the books as more than just the "Pepco Bowl," but also the dawn of a new age in funny car commercials.

In case you were too busy watching the Puppy Bowl, here are some highlights from the big night:

Kia Sorento - "Space Babies"

Kia's commercial is directed at parents but the witty ending does a good job of showing off the product in a way everyone can appreciate.

Audi - "Prom"

Audi takes the high school route, showing a dateless prom-goer developing courage as he drives his father's car.

Mercedes-Benz

Willem Dafoe, Kate Upton and Usher. What more can we ask for?

There were several more commercials worth seeing if you missed the game or worth seeing again even if you did catch the game. Overall, the game did not fall short of its billing as the one event worth watching just for the commercials.
