Blazer girls come out on top

by Diana Frey, Page Editor
The JV girl's soccer team beat Gaithersburg 1-0, making their record 4-2-2 this year. Katie Scott scored Blair's only goal of the game in the first half, who was able to sneak behind Gaithersburg's goalie when she was too far out of the goal.

JV coach Summer Roark believes that even though winning the game was positive, the win could have been more successful. "It was a good win, but we really should have had another goal," says Roark.

Forward Allison Rubin agrees that Blair could have taken this game as an opportunity to have a much more satisfying win. "We didn't play as good as we could have," says Rubin.

While exercising good trapping and passing skills, Blair had difficulties making full use of the whole field. The girls played along the right side of the field for most of the first half, and never switched the field to blatantly open players on the other side. With these mistakes, Blair still dominated the half but could not seem to make their plays end in goals.

Gaithersburg on the other hand was very passive and did not become aggressive till the second half of the game. Their goalie however did have an amazing punt, which Blair's defense battled with. "Our defense is what's saving us," surmises Roark.

The second half of the game was slow as both teams had about equal control of the ball. Both goalies had amazing saves that affected the outcome of the game. Elizabeth Burch took a beautiful shot on goal that would have scored if Gaithersburg's goalie hadn't made a good save.

Captain Rebecca Vogel thinks this game was one of the team's better ones. "Our passing was better in the midfield," says Vogel, "I didn't know what to expect."

Overall the JV soccer team is keeping up with the competition this season as shown through their wining record. "We're pretty even with most of the teams this year," says Roark.

Hopefully the girls will continue their winning streak throughout the end of the season. The girl's next game is at Sherwood on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 10:00 a.m.
