Rapper Young Buck charged in connection with stabbing

by Michael Bushnell, Page Editor
This is not original reporting. All facts have been gathered from The Associated Press story "Warrant Issued For Young Buck In Vibe Awards Stabbing"

Police in Santa Monica, California have issued an arrest warrant for rapper Young Buck in connection with the Nov. 15 stabbing of a man at the taping of the Vibe Magazine Awards in a Santa Monica airport hangar.

According to MTV News and the AP, Santa Monica police watched a tape of the fight, during which producer/rapper Dr. Dre was attacked. Investigators believe that Buck, 23, (real name David Darnell Brown) stabbed a man who assaulted Dre at the event.

Buck, will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. According to Santa Monica PD (SMPD) officials, Buck is one of three men seen with a knife.

"Brown is clearly depicted as holding a knife after the assault and is one of a number of fight participants that was pepper sprayed by officers in their attempt to stop this fight," Santa Monica police chief James Butts said at a news conference. "We're asking Mr. David Darnell Brown to surrender himself to police," he said.

According to The Associated Press and the SMPD, the melee began around 7:25 PST Monday Nov. 15 when Jimmy Johnson approached Dre for an autograph, only to punch the rapper in the stomach. The incident sent people running towards exits in all directions, according to The Associated Press.

Johnson was dragged away by security, but was then attacked by a large group of people, including Buck. The SMPD says that, at this point, Buck, in an attempt to get Johnson off of Dre, lunged toward the two, stabbing Johnson in the torso.

Johnson suffered a collapsed lung, and is currently in stable condition at a hospital, according to Butts. Dre was apparently able to get away without sustaining any major injuries, telling television reporters on UPN that "they," referring to Johnson, "can't stop me. I don't care."

UPN aired the awards show Tuesday Nov. 16, and the show was edited to remove any mention of the fracas.

Buck is signed to Dr. Dre's label, Aftermath Records. He was born and raised in Nashville, and released his major solo debut, "Straight Outta Ca$hville, this past August. According to Butts, he has past arrests in Nashville for minor offenses. He is part of the platinum rap group G-Unit, which also features New Yorkers Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent.

Why is SCO reporting this crap?

I think who ever got stabbed deserved what he got if he did hit Dr.Dre but it could of been done some where else other than the vibe awards but you know some body always has to act out and make a scene no matter where they are. There is always going to be a hater out there and it's up to you to determine whether you will feed into it or let it by pass you and just boost you up but then agian it's different with every body so I hope young buck gets off on this case cause he has a bright future ahead of him if noone stops him cause I believe in him. one love to all of G-unit and the rest of those who are down with that group. I'm out your hear with all that being said!

Stabbing jhonson was unecessary and stupid. Buck could have easily just snuffed him a few times or something. He knows that being in the spotlight is going get him caught anyway. Stupid.

Buck did it for the popularity boost. What happened? People talked about him and what he did. This was an image thing for his rap-game.

Johnson was stabbed in the torso. Sure, he suffered a collapsed lung, but most torso stabbing victims (when stabbed one time) will recover without serious incident.

I'm wondering ... who paid Johnson to punch Dre?
  • Young Buck on November 19, 2004
Sup. I am hiding right now. But I am innocent. GGGG G-UNIT!!!
  • haha on November 20, 2004
years in jail are GREAT for someones "rap game." sure shynes latest album sold well, but wait! hes in JAIL for a couple of more years.
  • chappelle on November 20, 2004
Young Buck G-G-G-G-G-G-G-GET yo butt in jail!
  • Austin Grasty (View Email) on November 22, 2004
Um please. These comments are horrible. You all have to be ignorant to believe that anyone deserves to be stabbed. The fact that Johnson was only stabbed once doesn't make it okay for him to have a collapsed lung. How could that possibly make you more popular. This reminds me of the fight at the Pacers game. There is such a thing as bad publicity as opposed to good publicity. Last time I checked, bad publicity and a new criminal offense to put on your permanent record isn't a good thing for anyone.

yea not all rappers that go to jail are success ful, we all know where mystikal is, doing 7 years in jail, what has that done for his career.....oh yea... it ended it!!!!

I dunt think they shood keep buck locked up for that incident.Even though he stabbed jonson,it was because jonson hit dr.dre, who i think is sumthin lik a father figure for buck since his father wasnt there for him,n he was jus doin dat to protect the one closest to a father to him.I noe if i was buck,i wood hav dun the same thing. And i also think buck shoodnt b locked up because there r rumors stating dat the hip hop n r&b singer monica is pregnat wit bucks baby.and since she hasnt said anything against it,its probably tru!i noe buck wants to b there 2 witness his child's birth, first kiss and a whole lot more.

  • Kiwilime (View Email) on April 3, 2005 at 4:09 PM
is it true that young buck was found guilty? free buck! don't give him life in prison, keep it 2 eight years in prison. he doesn't necessarily deserve life in prison. he may still be a good person, i do not want 2 judge buck. i love this dude. he may as well be the nicest rapper. he was just protecting his mentor dr. dre. it was done 4 a good reason--to protect dre!!!

I can't believe all of the ignorant statements made here. 1st of all Dre should have handled his own business. Bucks an idiot, he's doing time over somthing that didn't concern him and if any of you easly led morons say "he was keepin it real", give your head a shake and explain your theroy to his daughter. If Buck REALLY wanted to do some damage he wouldn't have tried to get him in a room crowded with police and security.

In all honesty, I hope Buck receives the lowest possible sentence. I'm not a violent person, but if I had a knife and someone I knew was being attacked, it wouldn't occur to me to think, "Oh, wait, does this really warrant me stabbing him?" No, I'd be thinking, "I have a sharp object. Sharp objects cause pain. Pain will make the attacker back off."

Johnson isn't going to die, and he'll likely make a full recovery. Buck only stabbed him once; it wasn't as if Buck went on a crazed stabbing spree.

I don't blame Buck for stabbing Johnson at all. It was a knee-jerk reaction to a volatile situation, plain and simple.
