SGA to hold freshman social after school on Nov. 23

by Shannon Egan, Page Editor
The SGA will hold a freshman social on Nov. 23 from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the SAC. The event will be free for students in the class of 2008.

The SGA has planned many activities for the social, according to SGA President junior Sebastian Johnson. The Diva Dancers, Step Team and Breakdance Club will be performing. According to Johnson, a DJ will provide music for Blazers who wish to dance. "It's not a dance, but there will be dancing," he said. The SGA is also planning to have free hot dogs, pizza, soda and water for all freshman attendees.

The normal school dress code will apply to freshmen attending the social, according to the SGA web site.

According to Johnson, the social is a good way for freshmen to become acquainted with the Blair community. "The [freshman social] is an opportunity for freshmen to get to meet each other and connect with other freshmen," he said.

The freshman social is the first event of its kind. ”No one [has] ever thought of the idea before until now," stated Johnson. English teacher Carole Tomayko's freshman Connections class came up with the idea for a freshmen-only activity and proposed it to the administration and then to the SGA.

Many freshmen feel that the event is a good way for students to get to know each other. “I think its good for us as freshmen to bond,” said freshman Malcolm Foley, who plans to attend the social.

Although some Blazers think that the social is a good idea, they believe that there was a lack of publicity that will cause a small turnout. “I'm not going because I just heard about it today on Info Flow, and that's too-late notice,” said freshman Joan Atkinson.

"The normal school dress code will apply to freshmen attending the social, according to the SGA website."

Not sure which SGA web site you're looking at, but since the Freshman Social is not an SGA Executive Board project, it isn't described on the web site at all. It's being planned and organized by the Freshman Class SGA, which is led by Freshman President Vijay Baharani. ('08 SGA is still in the early phases of getting access and training to edit their section of the web site.)

we sophomores want a party too!! if the freshmen get to throw one then so should we.
  • Man in the Yellow Hat on November 22, 2004
Yay. A celebration of exclusivity and financial waste. Why dont all the classes get such a party?

A good way to bond? You know what else is a good way to bond? Lets try having all your classes together. Oh wait, thats already in affect.

Sorry i sound bitter, but an event like this must cost money. money that could be better spent elsewhere.

    Re: Disgruntled Senior

If you want something like this for your grade, you should talk to your class SGA officers. The Senior Class President is Alejandra Barbarena.

This money is coming out of the SGA General Operating Budget, which allots $800 for class government grants. If you'd like to see the SGA budget stop by the SGA office at lunch or speak to President Sebastian Johnson or Chief Financial Officer Barun Aryal.

Re: Man in the Yellow Hat and a sophomore
Again, if you're interested in having an event for your grade, talk to your Class President:

    Freshmen - Vijay Baharani
    Sophomores - Bao Nguyen
    Juniors - Morgan Luker
    Seniors - Alejandra Barberena

Im assuming the $800 is meant to be distributed among the classes? What do you expect this event will cost, and will there be enough funds left over to be allocated to other class parties?

P.S. Man with One Silver Glove is not associated with me in any way, shape, or form. I insist that he change his name. Copy Cat.

why would they give us a party just cuz of the name...that has got to be the stupidest reason i have ever heard. none of you upperclassmen have actually provided a reason as to why you should have a party.
  • freshmen trying to defend clas on November 22, 2004
you realize that if this party was for you, you would not find it a total waste of money right? thats a total double standard. if you think its stupid for us, then you really cannot expect one since it woudl be stupid for you.

The money is meant to be distributed to whatever classes want it, and they don't request it very often. Also, the freshman class does not have its own funds right now, while the other classes have hundreds to thousands of dollars they've made from t-shirt sales and fundraisers to spend.

Maybe the reason upperclassmen think the freshman social is a waste of money is because it's coming from school SGA funds (like Eric Hysen said). The sophomore, junior, and senior classes would probably be able to afford this kind of event themselves because they have been at Blair for more than three months. Because the freshmen have only been at Blair for three months, they have to use money from the school SGA.

And about why the rest of the classes should have a "social"? For the same reason you should have one - just because.

We all know who the man with one silver glove is. For real, just back off, we were just napping.
  • Man with the Yellow Hat on November 23, 2004
I might point out that i am a sophmore, a lowerclassman as well.

So basically, the freshmen get the money because they ASKED for it? they took money out of a shared pot because they asked for it even though they have made no money themselves? Why dont we require that they first earn some disposable income to spend before having a FREE extravagent party with our money. I mean, i would be fine with letting the freshmen use the money for maybe a inter-class party, or even if was an emergency and they needed the money. But a free party? I feel like im taking crazy pills.

May i ask how much the freshmen social cost? I am interested in knowing what percentage of the funds they just spent.

I don't have an exact figure right now, but I'll try to find one tomorrow. I also do not know the exact reasoning behind the approval of the Freshman Social being free, you'll have to talk to Vijay or Sebastian about that.

The class grants fund is there to help any class government that needs it, and the freshmen were the only ones that needed it at this time. If they took so much that other classes have problems getting adequate funding in the future, the Senate can pass an appropriations bill to allocate additional money to it. Remember that the SGA has a large excess of money from Homecoming, thanks to ticket sales that were much higher than expected.

Does anyone else think that the freshmen are being handled with little kiddy gloves? This is ridiculous, first they have their own and now their own social so that they can "bond." When I was a freshman, I was just thrown into the mix and did my best to figure out high school on my own. This was better for me in the long run because I was integrated into the Blair community, not just the freshmen community. These kids are in high school so the faculty should treat them like everyone else. They are supposed to be prepared by now and if they are not, they'll figure it out along the way, it's called growing up!

what i think is crazy is that not only are the freshmen being babied, but the upper classmen weren't even allowed to walk through the sac to get to their nice cars that the freshmen can't even drive in the parking lot.
