Basketbrawlers may face criminal charges

by Alex Mazerov, Page Editor
This is not original reporting. All information has been compiled from the Associated Press article "Players may face assault and battery charges."

Indiana Pacers players involved in the brawl at the end of a Nov. 19 game against the Detroit Pistons will likely be charged for fighting with spectators, according to the Associated Press.

"Whoever was involved in fisticuffs will be charged, regardless if they were wearing a jersey. It's obvious there were several Pacer players and fans that dealt blows," Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca told The Detroit News.

Gorcyca declined to specify which players will be charged or what charges they might face.

Lt. James Manning of the Auburn Hills police said that he expects four Indiana players to be charged with assault and battery, according to the Associated Press. At a news conference on Monday, Manning said that an attorney for the Pacers told police that none of the players would participate in police interviews.

The NBA suspended Indiana’s Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson and Jermaine O’Neal for their involvement in the brawl.

Police discovered that another Pacer, David Harrison, also took part in the melee, but the NBA did not suspend him.
