Safe evacuation occurs despite problem with alarm system

The fire alarm went off at approximately 7:18 a.m. today, triggering a successful evacuation despite problems with the alarm system. Although the flashing lights functioned properly, the fire alarm's speakers were temporarily inoperative, according to Principal Phillip Gainous.

The evacuation was "a false alarm" probably triggered "by mistake," according to firefighter Miguel Collado, who was at Blair. Collado says maintenance workers are in the process of resetting the system but are having some difficulties.

Nothing was burning in the building when the alarm went off, according to administrator James Short, who suspects the alarm was pulled by a student.

According to Short, the evacuation occurred safely. "The kids did great," Short said.
