Senior Helen Alemu passes away

by Devon Madison, Online Entertainment Editor
Senior Helen Alemu died yesterday morning due to what is thought to be trauma to the head after a fall, according to an announcement made today.

Alemu's parents are not sure of the cause of her death, but they have been led to assume that she had a seizure, according to Assistant Principal Linda Wanner. "My understanding is that she had a seizure, causing her to fall and hit her head," she said. "Her family found her in the shower, and the trauma caused her sudden death."

Alemu was an ESOL student who was planning to take a fifth year at Blair to graduate high school.

According to her calculus teacher, Peter Engelmann, Alemu was a great student and person. "She was very polite and always helpful," he said. "She even helped another student in the class who was having trouble understanding the material."

"Alemu was well-loved by everybody," Wanner said. "She was very quiet and very sweet. [She] was Ethiopian, and the community was very close, so obviously everybody in the community is upset about it."

During the day, students were encouraged to see a counselor to talk about Alemu's death, and a large poster was hung outside the SAC for students to write on.

The memorial service and funeral have yet to be determined.

  • To all people who knew her on April 18, 2006 at 8:28 PM
I had the great pleasure of knowing Helen from a long time relationship that I cherished for so long. I not only thought of her as one of my students but also as one of the most courageous in her will to strive for excellence. I have been even moved by her amazing intellect and dedication to all that she has done. I never would want this to happen but especially to someone who had the potential to do amazing things as she did. I only have come to the conclusion now that we will never see her again, but in our heart and in our dreams we will always remember Ms. Alemu. My heart goes out to all of those who knew her and especially to her parents who cared so much about her.
Thank You for your courage and your friendship.

Lets hope that the school and Silver Chips gives Helen the same respect and treatment in the days ahead that they gave Andrew Helgeson last year.

And also, its crazy; we think we're invincible and then something like this comes along. It's beyond scary and I just feel horrible for her family.

Mourner's Kaddish, said in synagogues when a loved one or any member of the community, Jewish or not, has passed away:

May G-d's name be exalted and hawllowed throughout the world that He created, as is G-d's wish. May G-d's sovereignty soon by accepted during our life. And let us say Amen

May G-d's great name be praised for all time.

Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life's goodness. Let he who brings peace to the universe bring peace to all of us. And let us say, Amen

No one should be taken from this world at such a young age. NO ONE!!! And in this fast-paced world we live in, where true love is something rare, It's important to realize how much love matters, and how much teh people we love really matter to us.

I hope you lived a great life Helen. I hope that you were able to rach your end at knowing that you were able to solve what conflicts arose in your life, knowing that you gave strength to others, knowing that in your self-confident way, that you brightened up our world...

They say that we all have a mission on this Earth, and if by some chance, we fail at it, or miss it, or are taken from the world too early, then G-d will give us another chance.

May you, Helen, be able to build your own destiny, where ever you are....

she was like my sister and really close friends. i was suppose to call her over the spring break but i forgot. i realize how friendship is important after her is just not fair for her to die with getting nothing from anybody but giving to everybody.
    god rest her in heaven.

I didnt know the girl but I hate to see somebody die at such a young age. from what I read about her she was a smart girl with potential and determination. Coming here from a different country and being able to achieve so much is not easy. I hope her family can be comforted by the fact that she is with angles in heaven. And to her friends I know what it feels like to loose one and I hope that you can remember the good times and be happy instead of being sad about something that can't be changed.

life is precious, valuable, and only comes once. We are so blessed to be alive and we need to live like we appreciate each other. Making it to the next day is not even guaranteed, the next breath that we take is not guaranteed. We know we have a Father in Heaven who we can turn to when times get rough in our lives, if we, his people, call out to him, he will listen and provide. I will pray for Helen's family and friends and that God will comfort them in their time of deep sorrow. Love to all.
