Springbrook junior elected SMOB

by Varun Gulati, Page Editor
Junior Sarah Horvitz of Springbrook High School was elected as the 29th Student Member of the Board (SMOB). The results were certified yesterday at 6:31 p.m.

Horvitz won 54.39 percent of all votes while her opponent, Lindsay Abbett, gathered 45.61 percent of votes. Nine hundred and sixty-three of the ballots were "no votes," meaning that the students voted but exercised their right to not choose either candidate. Of the 76,372 middle and high school students "registered" to vote, 62,287 students voted, bringing the voter turnout to 81.6 percent, according to Genie Harman, secretary of the MCPS Student Affairs Office.

Elections were held in Montgomery County middle and high schools over the past two days. Touch-screen voting machines recorded students' votes on voter cards, which were returned to MCPS offices. Each school had a judge and advisor who were trained on how to use the voting machines. "All protocols had to be followed, just like any other election," said Harman.

Blair held voting for school SGA positions and SMOB simultaneously in the small gym. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors were allowed to vote for class officers and SMOB, while seniors voted for only SMOB.

Abbett and Horvitz were chosen from five initial candidates at the Nominating Convention on March 2, during which delegates from Montgomery County schools engaged in two rounds of voting.

I didn't even know the difference between the two girls. They both were equally bad candidates though

i think lindsay just made a bad impression on TV...kinda sounded like a ditz

thats why she lost, both the candidates ideas were pretty much identical

I thought Lindsay was better than Sarah, but as hmmm said, she sounded worse on T.V. She seemed smarter, just not as good at speaking.

They should have voted for each other. They had the EXACT same views and both emphasized that it was hard work. Hmm. I'm a candidate and I can get the same policies either way, yet either do hard work or take the summer off. I know which I would choose. Of course my platform wouldn't make the final two anyway. I also say that Sarah founding the Democrats club made all the difference too. We have a bunch of Democrats who simply love everything a Democrat says and hate everything Republicans/Bush says. If she had founded the Young Republicans club I guarantee less than 25% would have voted for her.

This was exactly lke election 2000, where the two agreed on almost EVERYTHING!!!!! There was no plan of action, no thought process!!!!! It was all a bunch of "I want to represent you" chatter (like every single US presidential speech)I guesss this will really prepare for for voting, because we'll have to listen to stuff like this for the rest of our lives.
