Accident in student parking lot causes exit delays

by Julia Mazerov, Online Entertainment Editor
An accident in the student parking lot yesterday blocked the exit onto University Boulevard, prompting the security staff to redirect traffic out of the lot. Senior Andrea Wilkinson collided with a school bus as it entered the lot at approximately 2:20 p.m. She suffered no major injuries, but did require medical attention due to a surface head injury. Paramedics were present almost immediately following the accident.

Wilkinson was traveling out of the parking lot in order to veer onto University Boulevard, but did not look both ways and failed to see the bus coming towards her. She was exiting through a lane designed for buses only, though students leave the parking lot through this lane often.

"It was my fault I didn't look both ways," says Wilkinson, "but the bus driver could have at least gotten out of his bus to see if I was ok." Wilkinson's vehicle was totaled and subsequently towed.

Security was not available to comment.

Are MCPS bus drivers allowed to leave the bus when students are aboard? Perhaps that is why the driver didn't get out.

Why do people leave through the bus lane anyway?
This was an accident waiting to happen.

He didn't get out? what did he do, drive off? Because I think that's hit-and-run. It doesn't matter that it was her fault, he/she has a legal responsibility to make sure she is okay.

Isn't what the bus driver did called a hit and run? Isn't it illegal?

people drive out of the bus lane all the time because its faster. if you want to go towards Langley Park on university than you have to go to the light at university on campus and then wait because there is a no turn on red sign. Also, even if you are turning left to go towards colesville rd/wheaton than you are still probably faster cutting across the 3 lanes to go to the turn lane at Loxford and make a U-ey. Its about time and teen drivers hate waiting and are very impatient. you waste time going to the light and id estimate that 75% of students who are going towards LP use that lane and about 50% of students use it regardless
