Wizards guard pledges $100 for every point he scores
Montgomery County schools should hope Gilbert Arenas doesn't lose his shooting stroke any time soon; The Washington Wizard's superstar, along with Wizard's owner Abe Pollin, have pledged to donate $100 to a Washington area school for every point Arenas scores in a home game this season, providing local schools with funding for necessities such as computers, athletic equipment and after-school funding.
Arenas, who was fourth in the NBA in scoring last year at over 29 points per game, is averaging close to 35 points in home games this year. That could spell lighter pockets for Arenas, who initiated his "Scores for Schools" program in October and headlined a press conference on October 30 to select the winning schools.
Out of 191 area schools, Arenas selected 82 as part of his program. 19 of these 82 are Montgomery County schools, including Blair feeder schools East Silver Spring Elementary, Rolling Terrace Elementary and Sligo Middle School.
Arenas, a prolific scorer, tallied over 1200 points last year at Washington's Verizon Center, which would have meant $120,000 donated to schools. Arenas also scored season-highs of 47 points several times last season and is looking to reach the 50 point mark this season, which means that some schools have the chance to receive over $5,000 on any given night. On Saturday, at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Gilbert Arenas came close, scoring a season-high 45 points and sending a fat $4,500 check to James Madison Middle School in Prince George's County.
