SGA club showcase to be held on Wednesday

by Clement Yang, Online Blair Connections Editor
The SGA will hold this year's club showcase in the gymnasium today, during 6th period. Every year, the club showcase event gives Blair's after school clubs the chance to perform for the rest of the school.

"The club showcase is a performance opportunity for all student organizations at Blair to demonstrate their exceptional talent," said SGA Director of Club Services David Hu, who coordinated the event.

The event will feature a slight change from previous years. In the past, all performing clubs, about 10 in all, had to perform within a short period of time. This year's club showcase will be divided into two parts. "What we're trying to do is have non-cultural clubs perform on Wednesday, while cultural clubs will perform in December. This gives each club more time to showcase their talent," says Hu.

The showcase will have performances by the Diva Dancers, Fashion Club, InToneNation, Blair's marching band drumline and Step Team. As the gym cannot accommodate the whole school population all at once, the performance will be divided into two halves, with half of the school attending each segment.

Last year's performance included about 10 clubs total, all of which had to perform within the 90-minute block.

fashion club's skit involved groups of boys dragging girls onto the floor blindfolded and mock-harrassing them. i was furious. the connotation in my mind skipped immediately to sexual assualt and rape.

i'm furious this wasn't considered and changed. shame on those who organized this event.

All the performances were previewed by staff members at Blair, usually the sponsors. If you find the act offensive, don't blame the SGA, you should talk with their sponsor.

So who wants to start the white, European, and/or southern heritage/culture club to perform at the December club showcase?

Wow, I thought the same thing. What was up with that?

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that the SGA was not to blame. You can consider this a formal apology.

However, I do think it was an issue to be addressed. I don't understand how others could not see the skit's connotations. I HOPE this was an honest mistake, and that those in charge of permitting the skit didn't think mildly of the crimes portrayed. And even if this was an innocent mistake, it's beyond me how someone could miss the fact that some might find these acts offensive.

Fashion club isn't on the list of extracurricular groups on BEN. I can't find the sponsor. Any help, anyone?
