SGA implements new process for club grants

by Lois Bangiolo, Online Managing Editor and Audrey Kubetin, Print Copy Editor
This year, the SGA simplified the procedure for evaluating grant
proposals for clubs.

In previous school years, clubs could make fund requests to the SGA
year-round. To streamline this process, the new procedure required
all clubs seeking funds to file grant proposals by Dec. 6, according
to senior David Hu, SGA director of club services.

Clubs that missed this deadline could still make fund requests at the
Dec. 7 Activity Council meeting, where representatives from each club
met to discuss the grants, but clubs that filed proposals before the
meeting were given priority consideration for funds, Hu said.

The SGA's budget for 2006 allocated $2,000 for clubs' grant requests.
Hu said funds were distributed among clubs based on amount of money
requested; level of need as determined by the SGA; comprehensiveness
of each club's plan for their proposed project; demonstrated
willingness to raise money through alternative methods, such as car
washes; and number of people who would benefit from each proposal.

By the end of the Activity Council meeting, the SGA had allocated
$2,900 among clubs, exceeding the budget by $900. The SGA Executive
Board met later in December to redistribute funds and determine final
club grants.
