BEN to be shut down June 15

by Pia Nargundkar, Online Editor-in-Chief
Blair Educational Network (BEN) will be shut down on June 15 at 3 p.m. Blair, under county mandate, is implementing Edline next year, rendering many of BEN's features redundant.

For the summer, a web e-mail interface will be put up so Blazers can still access the e-mail part of their BEN account, according to junior Doris Houng, a system operator. However, all course pages and files stored on BEN will be cleared on June 15. "It's really important that you make sure you have copies of everything you need on your BEN account," Houng said.

The system operators are currently working on a supplement to Edline that will have some of the features from BEN that Edline does not have like class discussions, schedules and the e-mail address. "It's very likely that we will be using [the supplement] next year," sophomore system operator Will Shepherdson said.

Oh man I knew people that wrote BEN it's a same the county is shutting it down for what is most likely an inferior system.

Alas, BEN, we knew you well and you shall be sorely missed.
  • oversimplified on June 13, 2007 at 9:49 PM
this is really an oversimplification. the way they are taking down ben is with an automated script, which will rename the folder ben is stored in. all files and folders will remain intact, and binx will still be operational. you can just get your files through binx. yes, edline does suck, but "bert" (can't remember what acronym stands for) will add back all the features ben had and edline doesn't.

I have seen edline! and it sucks! bleh!

homework will be that much more painful without forums. go BEN! I love you!

rip ben. you have been a good friend.
  • Clearing this up on June 14, 2007 at 5:13 PM
Just to clear up some misconceptions:
RE oversimplified: Binx is staying there, as said on the BEN page, but the sysops WILL be deleting files in ben accounts. Maybe not immediately but why risk it? Also, BERT is probably not going to be the final name (Blair Educational Resource Toolkit), more likely the name will be BEN Jr. or BEN Lite.

RE BEN IS BETTER: The replacement, IF it goes out, will be a complement to Edline, meaning that it has all the features Edline does not; forums, mail, etc...

Nothing is written in stone yet.

I'LL MISS YOU 4EVER BEN!!!!! You were so useful for storing files, and receiving daily news reports, and for finding out where people are. Because you'd be surprised how often people actually need to legitimately find out where someone else is in class. Now if I visit, I have to find another way to figure out where all my friends are.

Oh man. I can't believe they took ya down, BEN. We'll always have the memories of schedule stalking during the rubber band wars.
