Board of Education names Darryl Williams Blair principal

In its meeting today, the MCPS Board of Education (BOE) announced that Darryl Williams will be Blair's next principal. Williams has been the principal at Gaithersburg High School since 2005.

Williams taught mathematics at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, his alma mater, in Washington, D.C. from 1988 to 1994. He then joined MCPS and held various positions in the county, including math resource teacher, assistant principal, executive assistant and middle school principal, until his appointment as principal at Gaithersburg High School.

The hunt for a new principal began soon after Phillip Gainous announced his departure May 8. Community superintendent Heath Morrison led the initial search for a replacement, narrowing down potential candidates from both within and outside of MCPS to three candidates, one of whom withdrew his name before the next phase of selection.

The two remaining candidates, Williams and Newport Mill Middle School principal Nelson McLeod, were then interviewed by a selection panel of parents, students, staff and community representatives. "[The panel] was an accurate representation of the Blair demographic," staff and panel member Cindy Villavicencio said.

The advisory panel asked the candidates a series of questions about their administrative philosophy and plans for Blair, according to PTSA co-president and panel member Dave Ottalini. Each member of the panel voted on his or her choice for principal and the panel as a whole then made the recommendation of Williams to Weast. Weast accepted the panel's recommendation and handed his decision to the BOE.

Ottalini was enthusiastic about the selection, and said he believed Williams would do a good job. "Mr. Gainous accomplished a lot for Blair, but there are still things that need to be done," he said. "Mr. Williams will help to fix them – he'll be great for Blair."

Williams was unavailable for comment.

I think it's insulting to Mr. Gainous, having done so much for and spent so much time at Blair, for MCPS to only put forward a middle school principal and a high school principal with very limited experience as candidates for his job. Blair is the biggest school in the biggest school district in the state, and we easily deserve a state-wide or even national search for our principal. That the two seemingly most qualified candidates both happened to be from within MCPS and with such limited credentials (at least compared to those of Mr. Gainous) is quite odd...

Just because you here GHS is a "messed up skool," doesn't mean it is. It is a great school on mnay levels.

Soooo worried, GHS is not a messed up "skool." Perception and reality are two different things. A lot of amazing stuff is going on at GHS.

I was a student representative on the committee that evaluated the candidates for principal before submitting a name to Weast, and I empathize with some of the concerns voiced below. It did seem sort of fishy to be evaluating only two candidates when the search was allegedly national- it almost seems like few people wanted the job.
Still, Mr. Williams seemed really enthusiastic and interested, I'm curious to see what kind of job he does.

Perhaps you should have read the previous series of SCO articles covering Gainous's retirement and the subsequent search for a replacement before so quickly dismissing the merits of the selection process. MCPS of course perfectly understood Blair's need for a more-than-qualified replacement for Mr. Gainous due to its size and national prestige, and conducted an incredibly thorough call for applicants for the job, both from within and the MCPS system and from outside; a lot additional thought and care went into the search simply because it was for Blair. Though Williams has only a few years of experience as a high school principal, he has been a popular and effective leader at Gaithersburg (the Gaithersburg community has expressed their reluctance to see him go) and the selection committee obviously found him a qualified principal for Blair.

Mr. Williams will be a good principal. He did a great job as the principal of my middle school (FMS) before he became principal of GHS.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I am very glad Nelson McLeod was not chosen. He overreacts (he gave a 3 day suspension to a kid for throwing a paper ball) and was never liked by the student body at Newport Mill, and I doubt he would be any more popular at Blair.
