Blazers are awarded Maryland Distinguished Scholars Award

by Katie Sint, Online Managing Editor
Twenty-eight Blazers have progressed to the finalist stage of the 2007-2008 Maryland Distinguished Scholars Award (MDSA). Out of those twenty-eight finalists, two seniors are finalists for the award in the Talent in the Arts category. These seniors will be awarded an annual $3000 scholarship for in-state higher education.

Out of over 5,000 applicants state-wide this year, 462 students were selected as semifinalists and only 372 students were selected as finalists for the MDSA. Finalists and semifinalists received a certificate of achievement or talent in the mail and were invited to attend Distinguished Scholar Recognition Day on Saturday, Sept. 6.

The Maryland Distinguished Scholars Awards are awarded to current high school seniors in one of three categories: Academic Achievement, National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement and Talent in the Arts.

Winners of the Maryland Distinguished Scholars Award can renew their $3000 scholarship over three years, so long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and attends a two or four-year Maryland university or career school.

Finalists of the National Merit Scholarship and National Achievement Scholarship awards will be automatically given the award if they plan to attend a Maryland state university. Finalists in this category will not be identified until spring of 2009.

Last year, twenty-six Blazers had progressed to the finalist stage of the MDSA.

High school juniors are eligible to apply for the award each spring as long as they and their parents are Maryland residents and plan to attend a Maryland university. More information and an application form are available at the Maryland Higher Education Commission website.
