SGA announces homecoming and spirit week themes

by Ya Zhou, Online Connections Editor & Online Copy Editor
The homecoming theme this year will be movie genres, a theme nominated by the Student Government Association (SGA) and voted on by students in advisories. The subthemes are animated cartoons, superhero, science fiction and western for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen respectively.

In past years, the SGA voted for the theme, but it decided this year to incorporate more student feedback, according to SGA President Sibyl Brown. "We thought we would try to get more input," Brown said. Subthemes were nominated together with the main themes and presented to students. The other nominated themes were music genres, candy and animal kingdom. Each class will have designated hallways to decorate.

Homecoming will be preceded by spirit week and the homecoming football game. Due to the four-day election weekend, spirit week will take place over two different weeks. Thursday, Oct. 30 is Kindergarten Day, followed by Halloween Day on Friday. Wednesday, Nov. 5 is Kickin' It Old School Retro Day. Thursday, Nov. 6 and Friday, Nov. 7 are Class Movie Genre Day and Class Color Day, respectively.

The homecoming football game will be played against Springbrook at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7. A traditional pre-game tailgate party sponsored by the SGA will include free face painting and will feature performances from a go-go band and one of Blair's air bands, according to Brown. The event is open to all Blazers free of cost, except for food and select entertainment-related activities, such as donning inflatable sumo wrestler suits.

According to Brown, local radio station Hot 99.5 deejay Chris Styles will be returning as the deejay for the dance. The SGA will also include new touches, such as adding more lights than in previous years. "The main goal is just to keep the positive school spirit," Brown said.

Why do the sophomores always get the best theme? I mean, 'cartoons'? What are we supposed to do with that?

how the hell are we supposed to be animated cartoons? Of course, the juniors get the best surprise there. But even the freshman and sophomore themes are better than the senior theme. Way to go senior SGA members, thanks for representing us...

    Yay sophomores.
  • Senior on October 29, 2008 at 5:46 PM
Freshies should be cartoon characters- they're the short ones with high squeaky voices that'll fit into the little hamster powerpuff girl costumes

If you have any concerns with spirit week, then you can come to the SGA office and talk to us about how you feel.

I believe that once you have been at Blair from 6:30am in the morning until 9pm at night for four days straight like Sibyl and I have, your complaint is a little bit more legit. For weeks, we have gone to meeting after meeting after meeting with the administration, the PTSA, and the students. While I understand your frustrations, I too am frustrated and tired.

The SGA is always open to hear your concerns. You can come during your lunch in Room 161 to talk to us if you need to.

If you are complaining about class themes, then talk to your advisory reps because they were the ones who voted for each class.

Ms. Arce I am sorry I was so rude. The SGA really is doing wonderful things for the school. Thanks for being so nice and beautiful.
