Sniper fears keep Code Blue in effect

by Kevin Chang, Page Editor and Jeremy Hoffman, Page Editor
The Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system central office has reinstated modified Code Blue emergency procedures for the third time as a result of the recent sniper attacks in the area.

washingtonpost.com reported that police have just taken a man into custody in Virginia and confiscated his white Plymouth Voyager minivan, though it is unclear whether or what the action has to do with the sniper attacks.

Another shooting, which police say could be related to the previous sniper attacks, happened on the evening of Saturday, Oct 19 in Ashland, VA. A man leaving a Ponderosa steakhouse after dinner was shot in the stomach and rushed to Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia Hospital in critical condition.

The shootings have caused serious disruption to local school systems' schedules; among postponed activites are Blair sports events and Homecoming. For more information, see related article, Homecoming football game and dance postponed; pep rally canceled.

Witnesses report seeing a white Chevy Astro van with a ladder rack speeding away from the scene after the previous shooting, five days ago. A white panel truck was seen at several previous scenes.

This region has seen a string of shootings that police are attributing to a "cowardly" sniper since Thursday, October 3. Five people were shot and killed in Montgomery County on Thursday, Oct 3 in apparently random attacks and two more were shot in DC and Spotsylvania County the following weekend. Police have found one spent shell casing from a shooting at Benjamin Tasker Middle School last Monday.

Under the modified Code Blue, classes will continue on the regular schedule and eighth period classes will be held for students who have them. Students who have classes in portables should go to class via the SAC doors. Other doors to the building should be locked and guarded. All outdoor MCPS after-school activities and programs, including adult evening school, have been cancelled indefinitely. Indoor programs are currently operating as scheduled.

Students are reminded that cell phone usage is not allowed during the school day and parents are being asked to not panic or attempt to take children out of school. Parents who do wish to take children home will have to provide identification before they will be allowed to take their children. Students who walk home are encouraged to walk in groups, and all staff must remain in the building until dismissal is completed.

Officials believe that a white Isuzu or Mitsubishi delivery-style box truck, possibly with a damaged rear left door, which was seen at one shooting location, may be involved in the shootings. Police have reason to believe that the van may contain two men armed with high-powered hunting rifles, and have released composite sketches of what the truck may look like. A white Astro van with a ladder rack was seen at the latest shooting scene by several witnesses.

Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) chief Charles Moose asked anyone who believes they may know the location of the truck or have any other information to "continue to call [and] look at everything in a suspicious manner." He added that occupants of the van could be "angry or upset" and urged people to "let [the police] decide if your information is any good."

The tip hotline is 1-888-324-9800; the reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the sniper now tops $500,000. Anyone who wishes to add to the reward fund may call 240-777-2500.

Students worried about the sniper can call the MCPS youth crisis hotline at 1-800-422-0009 and visit the MCPS resources web page at http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/info/emergency/resources/.

The first of the Montgomery County sniper attacks happened at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, and the first fatality occured later that night. The next day, four people were killed in about two hours. A chronology of events follows.

Good job chips posting this so soon.
Thies is kinda scary but also seams overblown somehow.
  • Ben on October 3, 2002
Ummm Harry, I totally disagree. We have 5 people murdered in under 24 hours. We've just used up about 50% of last years total homicides. We're facing an increase in homicide rate of 100% this year. I wouldn't call it overblown. And undoubtedly someone at Blair is going to know one of the victims somehow, and it won't seem overblown to them at all.

This is crazyness...I go to Edison and we've been sitting around in a classroom since about 7:30 this morning. I wish all this nonsense would end...
  • Harry on October 3, 2002
I know that it is bad that five people have been killed so quickly. But, the Code Blue may be too much, I would say yea cancle actvites, and keep kids inside, but out of the hallways? Is that really nessacary. I don't know, but I don't really mind too much.

I agree with Ben, when in 16 hours we've had half our usual homicdes for the year ... that's bad.

More kudos to Silver Chips! The news item about the police stopping a white van at 355 & Nicholson Lane was on Silver Chips and nowhere else this noon - I emailed it to a friend who lives in Rockville and she couldn't believe a high school paper had scooped the Post. That's why Silver Chips is the best in the country I said. And now back to worrying.

I really can't believe that people actually do things like this. *shakes head* They're telling us to go on with our daily tasks, that everything is fine. They act like it's no big deal. While I know we do have to move on with our lives, this isn't an incident that we should just "shrug off." Ben's right, this is not overblown, and i hope it stays that way.

Harry, the Code Blue keeping kids out of the hallways wasn't because the school perceived danger in the hallways or anything, it was just to keep everything ordered so if anything were to happen, we could react quickly.
  • Noel Ibrahim (View Email) on October 4, 2002
Alright, what was the point of locking the doors and putting teachers in front of them? If someone really wanted to shoot some people at school, do you really think that a glass door and an old lady is going to stop them?
  • Art on October 4, 2002
Although I agree that the shooting spree is a truly devastating event, I feel it was unnecessary to call a Code Blue. We need to look at the big picture. A man is somewhere in Montgomery County, shooting a few people on the street. I feel that there was no reason to believe that he was any threat to students within the building. All exterior doors, except one or two, remain locked for the duration of the school day, and the doors that are unlocked are monitored by staff.
The negative effect of the code blue was the inherent uncertainity and worry. The media already has some of us scared to walk out our own front door over terrorists and where they plan to strike next. Calling a code blue for such a non-immediate emergency merely reinforces these feelings, and causes those with this mindset to become even more frantic. (*Stuned* is a good example of this.)

    Heather..
    "...I hate humanity."
An overused, meaningless generalization. People can be cruel, certainly. But these are the actions of one, maybe two, crazed humans. Does this mean that all humans would gladly repeat the actions of these men and wake up with a smile the next day? If it did, then this would not be the first time this has happened. (Sorry, but I'm tired of famous authors wasting breath about how evil humanity is.)

I sincerely apologize if anyone was related to or was friends with a victim; that is not my intention or the point of this argument.

Heather!!!!!!!!- I agree with you totally.
Kinda glad I escaped from Blair to Thornton Friends...As for this horrific act of cruelty, its just utterly appalling and disgusting. To shoot down and kill innocent victims when they're just minding their own business shows the overall lack of humanity in this world and how it is decreasing rapidly every year. I sincerely hope they catch the killer(s) quickly, and that no one else is hurt.
Hey to all my old Blair friends :) Thornton seriously is the best school in the whole world.

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??? One sniper (maybe 2-3 killers now)shows "the overall lack of humanity in this world? The fact remains that 99.9% of the people in the world haven't murdered anyone, and the fact that you would draw such a misguided conclusion in the face of all contrary evidence makes me glad you let Blair too.

Good work K. I'd add today's to grid and just say might be related-clearly everyone thinks it might. That's why we have code blue. I think Washington Times reported that DC one was not related. You could add stuff like that.

Even MORE reasons why humanity sucks... an innocent 13 year old shot down on his way into school. That could have just as easily been a Blair student. If it is unrelated, as authorities are saying, it just proves my point even further. Some poor excuse for a human being is using these horrific events as an opportunity to go on shooting sprees. What is the world comming to?

And as for catching the people behind these crimes, it seems highly unlikely that they will be using the same bullets, gun, or vehicle. I wish the sherriff's department luck. I doubt this crime will be solved anytime soon. Maybe i'm just being pessimistic.

stop the insanity, man. what the hell is wrong in that %$%$#^$#@'s mind that he is doing all this-i mean, assuming it has been the same person or the same group of people, but its kinda coincidental that this was just some random thing that just "happened." all of a sudden we can't even walk to school anymore, and we look at our neighbors in a new light, like they are barbarians. this isnt life, where you have to present an ID to verify your relationship to the student when you go to pick your sibling up from school. this isnt life, where you gotta go to the bathroom to call your mom cuz you're more scared than you've ever been for your loved ones' safety-minus the sept. 11th attacks. i'm terrified, man. and what scares me more is that the police know nothing about who's doing this: they dont know his race, his age, what he's after, and what the hell is cracked in his mind that is making him do all these things? is he a terrorist? is he just a deranged lunatic? no deranged lunatic could shoot perfectly. oh no, my friends. this aint no deranged lunatic. this has got to be a trained gun shooter. what if he's some dude trying to get back at the government? just when you think that life might just get a tad bit better, it gets ten times worse. i'm paranoid as it is, and now? now it's like i can't focus on crap-i walk down the street and i'm looking over my shoulder and gawking at strangers like some international spy. this needs to stop. somehow, some way, they need to catch that bastard so that he can fry in hell. because he deserves it. normally, i wouldnt say stuff like this cuz i am generally optimistic, but hell, this IS optimistic. find the %$#^%$#^ and make him pay for every tear those people cried and for every ounce of pain his victims felt and for every ounce of fear schoolchildren feel when they have to go to school. no, i am not blowing this out of proportion-i feel like this and thats just the way it is. nobody wants to wake up and wonder whether they will be alive that night-but that's how it is now. so lemme make a plea to the policemen: please please please pray to God and find whoever's doing this. and i'll even make a plea to the bastard who's behind all this: you will be found, and you will pay, and you will rot in hell so help me God you will ROT IN HELL!

(sorry for those who might think i'm blowing this outta proportion-forgive me. spare me your blah-blah-blah stories. think for a moment how the families of the victims must feel. ok, done thinking? now, does what i'm saying still sound too wild? i'm trying to speak for those people who are in pain right now, because they need to be spoken for the most.)
  • Abby Graber on October 7, 2002
Art-- i don't think the teachers at the doors was to prevent the killers from getting in, i think it was to prevent the students from getting out, which i find understandable. Also, as far as i could tell, the code blue wasn't really making anybody panic. Obviously, i didn't see everybody in the school everywhere, but the code blue didn't really seem to have that an enormous psychological effect. As long as they're just trying to protect the students and it doesn't really inconvinience anybody significantly, what's the harm?
  • Blazer on October 7, 2002
What's with all the Blair-bashing? I feel completely safe at Blair just as I always have. As for the area, I'm still very proud to live in Silver Spring. The perpatrators of these attacks are obviously very disturbed, and a crazy person can pick up a gun and start shooting anywhere in the country just as fast as they can where I live. As the now sky-rocketed murder rate will show, the shootings are NOT indicative of crime in the area. So let's keep the unity going, and instead of wanting to leave or being glad you did, try to support a community that I and many others are proud to call home. Go Blazer Football.

Enigma- Just reading your post made me think of the fighting in the Middle East. Its a big ironic that we turn on the TV and say, "Oh, another stupid shooting in Israel" but then complain of how the shootings here are messing our lives up. Now, don't get me wrong- I do believe the losses and the victims are truly a sad thing, but this sort of thing happens _every_ d*mn day over there- and the suicide bombers/soldiers tend not to care if they've just blown up a bus full of children. One part of me is worried and angry to see something like this happen, but at the same time, its the first time something like this happened whereas it might be the millionth over in the Middle East. Just a thought.

@#*$- Its people like you who I disliked in Blair. Wake up man! Open your d*mn eyes, or are you so blind from living in a "perfect world" all the time? Heather and I weren't just saying, "One thing happened and now the whole world is horrible"; we're saying, "Its adding up- everything people do over the years- the rapes, the murders, the kidnappings- and now this." I seriously doubt that 99.9 percent of the world hasn't committed murder- thats absolutely ridiculous. Where the h*ll are you getting your facts? And as for leaving Blair- I'm so happy I got out while I did! I didn't need ignorant fools dragging me down when I already had enough problems to deal with and I certainly don't need it now. But maybe thats why I'm at Thornton and not at Blair. They always said it was the quality not the quanity that counted.

Mabey it's just me but I feel they are using the code blue thing too much. Now if you need to go to the bathroom in class you have to be escorted. At my sister's middle school the teacher actully has to go into the bathroom with you. I think at this point every one allready knows not to leave the building and if you wanted to I doubt the teachers really could stop you. Actually all you would have to do is take of your id and they would kick you out.
Their is one good thing the peputual code blue means the county is getting all the kinks out of it. Kinda like at Blair, after having a fire dill every other week or something like that, we handle them pretty well.
Also I wish the school board would make up their mind I tink they change it about four times.

Enigma-thank you, I couldn't have expressed all of that better myself. I agree with "Blazer"..why IS everyone dissing blair here? And stop whining about the code blue..its not like its so strict in the first place. All they ask is that we stay in the classrooms and inside the building, FOR OUR PROTECTION. If you don't like what the school is doing to keep us safe then stay home! If you feel that the code blue is too much to live by, stay home, go to the mall, spend your day somewhere else, y'know, where you aren't safe. I feel safer at school than in my own home. Yes, the shooters got someone at a middle school, and yes, it's possible that they come to blair too. But here's the thing, I think they'd try to stay away from blair, seeing how A) None of us will be outside and the only way to shoot any of us is to get close to the school and B)These people know the county, they know that blair has cameras outside and it is on the biggest, bussiest interection in the county. Their chances of getting caught would rise so much. They're not *@&!*#$ with us. Umm yeah..i don't even know where I'm going with this anymore. It pisses me off thinking about it so yeah..bye :)

I said this incident is another reason to hate humanity. It isnt the only one. I'm well aware that most people would never even dream of killing people, but everyone hurts other people in someway. Its all apart of what society has become. Look at how many environmental problems we have in this world. What caused it all? Humanity and so called civilization. We have people who are homeless and starving to death, then there are people who are living alone in 5 or 6 bedroom houses with a bathroom on every floor. It's ridiculous. I'm not saying people shouldnt have luxuries, but when there are people dying because they dont have money to buy food or shelter, I think its a little sad that people would rather spend money on outrageous unnecessary things rather than help a fellow human being. It baffles me when people look at me strangely when my answer to "What would you do with a million dollars?" is "Pay for college and then give the rest to charity." Although I know there are some geniunely decent people out there, over all, humanity has become seriously defunct.
  • michaela on October 8, 2002
I don't understand why people don't feel safe at Blair. We are all inside the school. All the victims that were shot were still or barely moving around so the guy can't be that good of a shooter, even though he did shoot all his targets. As long as you are moving I'm pretty sure you won't get shot. i don't think our school would be a target because it's so fast and busy around our school. All the places where the shootings took place was quiet and not so crowded. So i don't think you should feel that you're not safe at school. And why do people think it's more safe if th schools close. HELLO? if there was a school closing do you think that students would stay home or go to the movies or the mall? I'm freaked out about this whole thing too, but I left straight to the mall as soon as school ended today. So school closing is not a wise idea even though i want school to close just so that i could get more sleep.

@lexandra-i did not say a single thing about the shootings in the middle east. for the record, YOU brought that up, not I. I hate to see people suffering and i dont give a flying damn if they live in the middle east or in maryland or in the north pole. it's not like we can do anything to stop it, but we can try to catch this bastard here-considering that it is most likely a small group of people doing this. nobody wants to live in horror. why, should i be happy that this is going on? should i go find whoever's doing this and be like, "ok, since people are dying in the middle east, just so it can be fair, i'll help you kill twice as many people as you've killed already, just so it can be fair." look, if i could save even one person from dying in the middle east, i WOULD. if i could save one person from dying here, i WOULD. it sux that people are dying, and this sorry s.o.b. that's doing this thinks that he's God---it just shows you how screwed some people really are. but we need to catch this dude so that we can save some people's lives. as if most of us dont have enough things on our minds as it is--now we have to deal with some dirty bastard wanting to kill us all for some demented reason. i stand by what i said before: stop the $^%^%$ insanity, and i dont give a damn where the insanity is happening. and whoever is doing this is like a suicide bomber: he's targeting anything that lives and breathes and who gives a damn about anything else. and about your comment to that other guy: NO, we do not live in a perfect world. you ask me how perfect my world is! come on, ask me! ask me how many times i cry, how many times i get yelled at for stupid bullcrap, how many times i wanna tear my hair out!!!!!!! ask me! but i swallow it all up and i take it all in and it rolls off my back and i take it as a sacrifice and i'm happy-and you know, something like this really stops someone from being optimistic. and of course, "i hate humanity" is such a slogan for the "misunderstood" today, well, i will break down the barrier and say that generally, "i like people, but i hate crazy murdering jackasses." there, and that is accurate in my case. sure, i can be a "rebel" a complete and total "poser" and be like, "die, everybody, die" and i'll be happy when it does happen and maybe i will go and join this crazy %$%#$% who's doing all this. i'm riled up and pissed and hot and i dont give a damn if i sound like a b$&%h anymore. oh, and heather, havent you done something sometime in your life to hurt another person? it's like saying, "i hate people because they sin and i don't." YOU CANNOT JUDGE EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THIS EARTH BASED ON THE ACTIONS OF A SMALL MINORITY OF MURDERERS!!!!! you wanna hate people becuase they are sinners? and i assume you think that you are Jesus, since Jesus doesnt sin. it's like saying, "i hate myself becuase i sin." why the hell must everyone dwell on negativity!?!?!!?! i am not a negative person, and you have no clue how pissed off it makes me when people go around hating other people they dont even know just becuase they are humans. it's like, "my last boyfriend's name is Qwerty, and i hated him, so therefore i hate everyone named Qwerty." or, "i picked an apple from that tree over there, and the apple was ruined, so that tree only gives ruined apples." i am aware that there are horrors in this world. but why hate innocent people who probably hate those horrors as much as we do, although they are mistakenly branded to being a PART of the horrors? by hating other people who have not done anything to us, who we dont even know, we are being a part of the problem, not the solution. and the moral of all my ranting and raving is: SPREAD THE LOVE! so overused, so cliche, but that's the way we gotta help each other through this difficult time. thanx for reading, and please, spare me more of those, "enigma sucks, enigma is wrong, enigma loves people so that means she loves me and i hate being loved, so i hate enigma." alright, i'm done, for now.

Who wants to hear what I have to say? No one, probably, but I have the chance to put it up here, so you're gonna get it wether you like it or not.
Blair is being extremely unreasonable about this. I have no problem with the restrictions put in place by the county; quite the opposite. There aren't enough restrictions. I cannot believe they still allow students to walk out to the portables, but we are not allowed to eat lunch outside. I have a class out there every single day, and I walk through the very area where most people would eat lunch outside, if they were allowed to. I am sure a few empty classrooms could be found to accomodate these classes and the fact that Blair has done nothing to enhance the safety of the students and teachers out there is pathetic. Even class in the auditorium would be fine, it worked well on Monday. Yesterday, Tuesday, my spanish teacher felt unsafe in the portables and demanded to be allowed to hold class inside. We were allowed to use one of the confrence rooms in the media center, but the administration has threatened my teacher with her job if she refuses to return to the portables tomorrow. They say the school is quite secure, that there is no need to fear an attack with all the protection we have. But then, why can't we eat outside? If Mr. Gainous believes it to be so incredibly safe, he can come out there and sit in on my spanish class. I sincerely hope by my spanish class tomorrow, the administration has realized how stupid this is and allow my spanish teacher to teach in a safe environment. A substitute could not do nearly as well is she is doing or prepare us for the AP exam.

Blair is one of the best schools in the region, especially with all its different programs and such added on. Can you imagine a public school seriously competing with private schools? I can - but it's not just imagination.

If you wanted to compare schools, go and try your hardest, do your best, study hard, at each school, then come back and tell me that Thornton somehow gave you more educational opportunities.

I would imagine you would say that Blair gave you more opportunities. If you really pushed yourself, you could really get a lot out of Blair. There are simply more things to do, more connections. Bigger can mean better. I suppose most people just want a normal education handed to them on a silver plate that they pay for (rather than a cheap ceramic plate). The label 'private' MUST mean it's better, right?...

Now that He has it, we should consider giving to Him what He wants & what He desires......us. Bow down & worship Him!! Seek His wisdom everyday, all day. Yes, it may mean you will have to read the Bible. Think about it.....history repeats itself.
  • Abby Graber on October 11, 2002
I don't really want to get into a theological discussion here, and no insult meant but frankly, if i walked into to school with a gun, shot some people to get your attention, and then demanded that everybody in this school bow down to me, would you? i think not. it's time "god" found a different tactic.

I find it disgusting that some people are insinuating that this shooting is another "terrorist" attack. Several of those shot were of middle eastern origin, so it could just as well be a white vigilante extremist.
  • Harry on October 11, 2002
First a believer what type of God are you refering to. It sounds like you are refering to Zeus or something.
Also I so agree with everyone here that it is insane how the code blue is working. You can't go to the bathroom with out a teacher. Man we are high schools. At my sister's middle school the teacher has to escort the student *into* the bathroom to ensure they are safe. Get some sense people.

    @lexandra,
After reading your praises of Thornton Friends School and your derisive remarks concerning Blair, I have a few things to say about your statements.

    1) "Thornton seriously is the best school in the whole world." Surely, Thornton must better than all the other schools in our region, even if Blair has had the most National Merit Semifinalists in the region for the past seven years.

    2) "But maybe thats why I'm at Thornton and not at Blair. They always said it was the quality not the quanity that counted" Truer words were never spoken. Surely, Thornton's record number of students accepted into our nation's top colleges assures me of the caliber of its students--hark, I misspeak. It was Blair who had six students accepted into Harvard; it was Blair who had three students accepted into Cal Tech; and it was Blair who had three students accepted into Stanford.

    3) "And as for leaving Blair- I'm so happy I got out while I did! I didn't need ignorant fools dragging me down" Please excuse me for being an "ignorant fool."; I am wasting my time reading Blair's Silver Chips, which is only the "most popular student newspaper in the country" according to Yahoo. I could better spend my time on the website of the sagely Thornton Friends newspaper, if only there was one.

And so I conclude my petty ramblings, and I apologize for wasting your time. I am only an "ignorant fool" who sees the prestige of Blair's great "quanity" of wonderful students. Surely, Thornton is the "best school in the whole world," even if you, a Thornton student, must get your news from the newspaper of Montgomery Blair.
  • Qwerty on October 12, 2002
First of all, I believe that this person responsible for all the killings knows definitely what he is doing; he probably has a very good reason for it. Second, what is this discussion about? Whether Thornton is better than Blair? (The Answer: Go Blair!!) Third, let's try to make this a bit more general, instead of yapping away at each other...

Guys, relax. I don't think Alexandra meant it like that. Sure the education at Blair is pretty good. And we've won a lot of awards. Yay for us. But there are a lot of people that are not exactly pleasent to be around, teachers and administration included. Struggling to get to class on time along with 3,000 some people isnt exactly fun either.

I think that everything has been blown out of preportion. In a region with a homicide rate like DC, people get shot on a regular basis, the only reason that it has been altering the school sytems' schedule is because it is just one guy (or girl) that is doing all of the shootings.
In addition I think that when the media talks negatively about the sniper it could put even more lives at risk. If he is called crazy he could get even more angry. If he is called a coward, he might want to show everyone how uncowardly he really is, a very bad idea.
  • Elizabeth (View Email) on October 14, 2002
The reason that people are so freaked out now is because ordinary people are dying. Although Maryland has the third highest murder rate in the nation, nearly every person killed here is involved in gangs/drugs. That doesn't capture media attention because no one really cares about those people. The general public isn't at risk normally of being murdered. Gang/drug killings have a motive. They are not random as the killings by the sniper are. Everyone is at risk from the sniper-- there is no way to keep yourself safe, short of staying indoors all the time. It is not being blown out of proportion at all: the fear is completely justified.

  • Dan Curl on October 14, 2002
I think we have to be careful how we as a society label people as cowards. I know it isn't the topic at hand exactly, but look at the September 11th attacks. On the previous forum about that topic, many people called the hijackers cowards. However, take a moment and think beyond the bias of society. I personally think that it takes great bravery to die for what you believe in. I know that I would have great hesitations dying for a cause, and thus I believe that terrorists, while they are malicious and misguided, have a significant amount of determination and bravery. Undoubtedly, many of you will be thinking, "How can you call people who kill innocents brave?" But look at it from an outside, unbiased perspective. Cowardice and bravery have nothing to do with the morals and reasons behind the actions, and all to do with the strength and willpower of the person carrying out the action. The terrorist in Israel who tried to abort his mission and run, was a coward, because he couldn't go through with his actions. Remember, this doesn't make the actions right, but it does show bravery on behalf of the person.

hee hee, you go, blazer. i honestly could not have worded it better myself. BOOOOYAAAAAAAH!!!!!!! oh, and by the way: i just heard on CNN that they might have found that s.o.b...i cant give ya big details just yet, but i heard that he got shot by his girlfriend who turned him in and, he has an Astro van full of weapons and police monitors and he is an ex-marine and a sniper teacher---something along those lines, anyway. all they need is a search warrant, it seems, to check out his house-in Baltimore, which reminds me, he was also a cleaner or something of that sort, so that is how he knows his way around MD-and i think we might have our man. he seems to fit all the criteria...now, dont take it from me, i heard all this from someone who has cable at their house and was watching CNN...i guess cnn.com must have this...but then again, i'm not too sure. that's all i know, but if this is the %$#%#$ psycho that has been behind all this---ooooh i will have a field day for the next week and a half, baby. oh yes.
  • Guy From Another School on October 14, 2002
"Can you imagine a public school seriously competing with private schools?"
Members of Blair's It's Ac team said something very similar before they got WHIPPED by two private schools.

"I am wasting my time reading Blair's Silver Chips, which is only the "most popular student newspaper in the country" according to Yahoo. I could better spend my time on the website of the sagely Thornton Friends newspaper, if only there was one."

It's really not that hard to create something like SCO - all you need is a server handed to you and a guy who can code php.

Anyway, I'm writing at 10:34 PM Monday, and the guy just struck again, in Virginia at a Home Depot.
  • Katie (View Email) on October 14, 2002
    another shooting tonight.....so sad! :o(
  • Peter on October 15, 2002
I would also like to point out that most private schools contain students whose parents can afford private schools, i.e. richer than the general population. This *usually* means that those students, in general, work hard. Just because Blair messes up once doesn't mean they're worse. I notice you haven't said anything about the semifinalist awards, the National Merit Scholars, the average AP score on a test, the school newspaper, SCO's popularity, the college selections. Different accomplishments from students that are in (and aren't in) programs at Blair. No private school can compete with us on that kind of level - as in awards, competitions, and the like.

Does anybody in the Washington DC region have something similar to Silver Chips? Maybe Black and White (Walt Whitman), but they don't have half of the features that SCO does (apparently their newspaper is decent though, so I have to give them props for that). How about BEN? Does anyone have BEN? TJ probably does (Thomas Jefferson, in VA). But that's still not private - that's public. (That's arguable though, with the funding that TJ receives you'd think it was private.) Besides, you're gonna need a lot more than one person with PHP experience in order to run Silver Chips Online. Likewise with the print edition. Likewise with BEN. And it takes skill to create the kind of popularity and respect that SCO has.

Personally I have never heard TJ's newspaper competing with other area newspapers on any serious level. That goes to show you the breadth of Blair's accomplishments.

    Stay vigilant - Peter

Alexandra just happens to be one of my best friends and I think it's time someone stood up for her. You people don't know what she put up with from people here at Blair. And it wasn't just from students, either. Some teachers gave her [] constantly as well. Although I disagree with her comments, you shouldn't jump down someone's back until you know their story. She has walked in the shoes of a Blazer, have you walked in hers?
  • Guy From Another School on October 15, 2002
I resent the comments of Blazer. This just reflects the selfish attitude of some of Blair's students - the opinion that Blair is the best school imaginable, far better than any private school.
The fact is, public school is public school.
Now, at a private school, you may not learn quantum physics to the extent that you would at Blair, but what you do gain is a REAL EDUCATION - something that will aid you greatly in real life. Private schools don't have to conform to the political correctness of the MCPS curriculum.
Also, I agree with @lexandra - "They always said it was the quality not the quanity that counted..." It's true. Blair is all about quantity. For instance, SCO may make a lot of articles, including those exclusively online, but none of them are actually very in-depth. This one could have been copied-and-pasted from a Jerry Weast letter and Washington Post online. Nevertheless, you guys think you are the next MSNBC.com. (There is a huge difference between site hits and page views.)
Also, let's consider BNC. Sure, they make a lot of shows, but they are all of extremely poor quality. Aside from the fact that MCPS-TV is rarely watched, it becomes worse when you're expected to watch a kid interviewing people for a half-hour.
Why doesn't Thornton have their own online newspaper? Well, @lexandra probably didn't come to this site in search of news. She was probably checking up on her former school. Many other high schools have online newspapers, but this is one of the few with forums. Why is this? No, not because they don't know how to. It's because they are unable to. Blair was lucky enough to get a server handed to them a few years ago, and got themselves an .edu address before it became impossible for high schools to obtain such an address. In addition, the MCPS server does not allow the use of PHP - the very code that drives this site. Imagine how much more effective school websites would be if they had their own server - I guarantee you, there would be schools outdoing Blair.
For my last comment...You mention several good things about Blair - students getting accepted into prestigious colleges, National Merit semifinalists, etc. What is the similarity between all of these? They were all won my MAGNET students. Blair in itself is a poor school. Their magnet program, on the other hand, is quite exceptional. They are the ones who made SCO, they are the ones winning the awards, and they are the ones who make Blair seem like the spectacular school it isn't. I believe that the truly intelligent people can realize that it isn't worth being a part of the magnet program if it involves going to Blair. Let's keep in mind that the reason that the magnet and CAP are held at Blair is because it had been such a horrible school. In fact, imagine Blair without those programs - they'd probably still be in the nearly-dilapidated Sligo Creek facility, it would be one of the worst schools in the county, and NO ONE would want to go there.
Not only that, but you have MCPS on your side. They are willing to neglect other schools so that the Blair magnet program can excel. If they would only give other schools the opportunities that Blair has, then Blair wouldn't seem as spectacular as it is.

  • Andrew (View Email) on October 17, 2002
surely blair isnt as bad as you make it out to be. at all. it is not only CAP and MAGNET students who give this school its name. there are many kids in the honors programs and even those in regular classes who contribute. myself for example, i am not in any special program. i am on BNC and also work for Silver Chips. i know many people who are similar to this effect, doing many things for the school while not being in CAP or MAGNET classes. some of BNC's shows may be mediocre, thats true. but look at InfoFlow, our inhouse tv announcments which are aired DAILY. InfoFlow is genrally of pretty good quality. it is not easy to produce a show everyday at the highschool level, and just that in fact is done particuarly well with InfoFlow. even if things (some BNC shows) dont come together as well as possible, that doesnt mean that the people behind the shows arent talented and dont know what theyre doing. video is a very tough field to work in. if you dont know, try it yourself. if you have tried to work with video, then you should have some level of appreciation for what BNC does.
the anti-blair sentiment is rampant on this page. if there is a reason you dont like blair, then dont go here. most of the kids that go here like it fine. if you dont like it, then you go somewhere else. i personally know three students who have transfered from other schools to blair because of its reputation and who like it so much more than their previous school. these students were not CAP or MAGNET students, they were regular kids. they didnt come here for the magnet program. they came here because blair is an accepting and tolerable school. for its size, there is actually a decent sense of community here at blair. i think this is notable and worth pointing out. blair is actually a really good school. every school has its bad points, but i think that blair is not really as bad so you make it out to seem. at all.
  • Harry on October 17, 2002
Just curious "Guy From Another School" what school do you go to that make you feel like Blair is so lousy? I would bet that it is a private shcool form you additued. And that your mommy or daddy has a real nice job as lawyer or a docter and makes all the money to send you to private school. Also you forgot about the CAP program they also do a bit of the writting and stuff
  • Harry on October 17, 2002
Sorry about the double post but I got cut off last time.
Anyways "Guy From Another School", you were saying that we can do all this cool stuff like chips online becasue we have our own server, which is true. So if private schools are so much better than Blair why don't they go out and get a server and show how much better they are?
Well I've made my point Blair is really cool.
One other thing Blair dose not respent how most public schools are. In many casees a private school will work out better the a publice school Blair is so cool becase it is an execption to the rule.

I believe people shouldn't be persecuted, especially for their opinions. But I do believe, however, that before you state your opinion, you should be somewhat educated on the topic. I don't know how many people who have said something negative about Alexandra actually knew her, but she knows what Blair is like. And seeing as we know each other pretty well, you and I shall talk more on this topic in school on monday. ;)

"video is a very tough field to work in. if you dont know, try it yourself. if you have tried to work with video, then you should have some level of appreciation for what BNC does."

Yes, believe it or not, I have worked with video, having taken part in a high school newsannouncement show. And I believe that so much unnecessary effort goes into Info Flow, just to achieve poor delivery of the morning announcements. It is because of this that I believe InfoFlow to be by far the worst of all BNC shows. Other shows may be somewhat informative, but they are not on the middle school level.

"Does anybody in the Washington DC region have something similar to Silver Chips? ... How about BNC?"

Like I said, the reason other schools don't do this is not because they don't know how, it's because they are unable to. For their own reasons, MCPS does not allow anything except for HTML and client-side JavaScript on their server. For this reason, schools are unable to create anything like SCO or BEN. Aside from that, MCPS now offers features that are equal to or better than those of BEN.

"I notice you haven't said anything about the semifinalist awards, the National Merit Scholars...No private school can compete with us on that kind of level - as in awards, competitions, and the like. "

It isn't fair to compare the number of awards and accomplishments of public and private schools, because of the difference in size - another advantage of a private school. Also, as I stated before, private schools do not put a huge emphasis on advanced sciences, making them ineligible for a number of the competitions Blair has won awards in.
  • Another Guy From Another Schoo on October 19, 2002
I totally agree with “A Guy From Another School”. I have been hearing lots of good things about Info Flow. I have personally downloaded episodes off the BNC website. From the looks of this show, it could be done with a VHS Reporter and a Linear Editor. Why roam the campus instead of using your studio? (Or should I say studios) You have the highest equipped TV-Studio within MCPS. You could produce a show similar to this from an elementary school TV-Studio. In fact, why not convert your studios into classroom space? It seemed to work well for elementary schools and all you seem to need is a modulator, a liner editor and a VHS reporter.

    hey "guy from another school",
if silver chips online is so bad, as you say it is, then why are you on this site? do you really have nothing better to do than to go to other schools' websites and write long opinions about how bad blair is? is your life that boring or meaningless that this is how you have to spend your time? and what you said about bnc, that just shows your immense ignorance. some of us who produce the shows don't necessarily do it because we want to be famous (i would like to think we have a little more reality than that). we do it because we like to produce shows. maybe something isn't worth doing for you unless you get all the recognition in the world for it, but the rest of us are a little more grounded than that. we aren't so insecure that we need a huge round of applause for everything we do, but obviously you do. why don't you go do something better with your time, cause man, your pretty pitiful.

I, too, am proud to be a blazer and am grateful for the opportunities blair has to offer. This does NOT mean I think we are better than everyone else. In fact, no one is 'better,' each school has different things that are good about it. BUT ALL OF THIS DOES NOT MATTER! We should not be arguing about which school is the best, not on this page, anyway. Our energy would be better directed toward comforting those affected by the shootings. There was another shooting last night, bring the total to twelve. And NINE of those were fatal. NINE INNOCENT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED WITH NO RATIONAL MOTIVE AND WE SIT HERE ARGUING WHO HAS A BETTER NEWSPAPER, BETTER ACADEMIC PROGRAM, OR BETTER TV PRODUCTIONS. This is so pathetic! Jeremy Hoffman-
I have a firewall. It scrambles my IP address and sends information to your server in a frame relay fashion. Meaning that it is impossible to find who I am or where I am from. A guy from another school and another guy from another school are two different people who sent messages from two different computers put on the same router at the same time. The service is called VPN. It allows multiple people to share an independent high-speed line. We both attend different schools around your local area. And we both share similar opinions on the TV industry.
  • Guy From Another School on October 21, 2002
"In layman's terms, the two comments came from the same IP address, posted at almost the same time. They're the same person."

So, essentially, what you are doing is revealing my identity - something I thought your comment policy forbade you from doing. I will stop posting on SCO, before I begin seeing strange-looking people outside my house.

If you must know, this was not me - it was a friend of mine.

Jeremy Hoffman, if you're going to have a debate, try to defend your points on their merits and not by using inside information such as IP addresses. I wouldn't have thought that SCO would sink to the level they did. I would like to know what the staff sponsor of SCO thought of your actions.

Note: the truth, if any, of this comment has not been verified by Silver Chips Online. Dear Chief Moose: Please be advised that there is a 25-year old French Army Second Lieutenant who is 'AWOL', from his unit in France. According to the report which I have read, the soldier was here in the U.S. on 'leave' [August] from his unit in France. It is also reported that this individual, according to French officials, "has a very, very good reputation as a marksman." If by chance this possibly is the individual you are searching for, i.e. 'the sniper'. this would explain the 'poor english' in your communications, etc. Needless to say, you and your various components are already aware of this persons status, however, I just thought I'd do my part and pass along the info to you. Best of Luck in your efforts, J. L. Wade P.S. Should you have a spare minute, you might read a poem called "IF" by Rudyard Kipling. Sometimes we need something to help recharge our batteries as it were. Be well be safe and again best of luck in these trying times.

Well, if you want to have a debate, it's best not to lie. *ahem* I think Jeremy's justified by verifying where the socalled information comes from...

yeah i am in support of the guy from another school and the another guy from another school.

i understand how it would seem as tho the two comments were from the same person, BUT... now that your initial intuitions have been disproven... i see no apologies as to the actions you took.

speaking of code blue... i hate how code blue has really lost its meaning. not supposed to be walking around halls? haha kids were walkina round... even skipping halfway through the day... doors not supposed to be open? I dont think any teachers were followign that one.

Guy From Another School (the first one): You seem to think that Jeremy's actions were so wrong, but I fail to see how he did anything outside his responsibilty. He suspected, as did I, initially, that you and the second poster with the same name were the same person. I believe that he had every right and even the responsibility to the SCO community to check and make sure that you were not posting false information. In this case, it is not so much false information as false consensus. Maybe it wasn't polite of him to post the IP addresses on this forum, but he definitely had the right to check the IP's and that is by no means 'spying' on users.

Hey, if anyone wants me to tell them who these guys are, email me. :). SCO Wouldn't let me post the names but we were able to find out. These two really make me mad.

And that whole VPN thing is just bull. If you're going to blatantly lie about how you are accessing the internet, at least get your acronyms straight so you don't sound like total idiots.

Also, next time, if you are really concerned about security and privacy, don't go posting from MCPS computers.

    -Have a nice day-
