Homecoming game, dance, and pep rally rescheduled

by Kevin Chang, Page Editor and Griff Rees, Page Editor
Blair's Homecoming football game has been postponed to November 4 and the dance will be held November 2. The pep rally scheduled for October 11 will be held on November 1.

In a schoolwide announcement on the afternoon of Oct 11, Principal Phillip Gainous said, "as of now, the Homecoming game is rescheduled for November 1 [and] as of now the Homecoming dance is rescheduled for November 2." The homecoming game had to rescheduled to the next Monday because of the rules having to do with the number of practices between games. Gainous also said that the pep rally planned for that day had to be canceled due to rowdy behavior by a mob of students at the end of lunch. He expressed hope that the rally could be rescheduled but did not give a date at the time.

Blair will play Magruder High School for Homecoming instead of original opponent Paint Branch. The Paint Branch game was played on Monday, Oct 14 as a regular game.

The game against Paint Branch, originally scheduled for Friday Oct 11 at 6:30 p.m., was postponed several times in response to a shooting at a northern Virginia gas station (see related story, Shootings continue to disrupt schools).

uh...this article is totally ambiguous. first it says that the football game(which is tomorrow) has been postponed. but then it says that the status of activies for friday and saturday have not been determined yet. so is the game canceled or not?
  • Jay (View Email) on October 10, 2002
so the football game is postponed but the dance isnt? Please clarify
  • Jacob on October 10, 2002
The status of activities tomorrow decide whether the dance will be postponed or not. The football game is definitely postponed.

    im assuming you by

Early reports indicate that postponed Homecoming football games for schools across the county will be played at 2:00 p.m. and that other postponed football games will be played at 6:30 p.m.

you mean 2pm on saturday...so I'm changing it.

this is ridiculous. we cannot put our lives on hold for this psycho. if we start cancelling things now, how far will it go? will we have to wait until the guy is caught in order to have regular activities?
i feel bad for the senior football players because homecoming is probably a big deal to them and there's no way that as many people are going to come to the game on saturday as would have if the game was on friday night.
i have been waiting three years to go to the crowded homecoming game as a senior and do all the cheers and stuff, and now it won't happen.
i do feel very bad for those who lost friends and family in this mess, but we have to continue on with our lives.
and how are we supposed to get all excited at the pep rally tomorrow when there is not going to be any homecoming game tomorrow night. i would personally like to thank whoever made the final decisions for ruining part of my senior year.

i agree, this is ridiculous. the school board is focusing so much on the miniscule chance of having potential liabilities that may rest with this situation than actually thinking about the students's safety. it makes no sense to cancel all the games, all the activities, and virutally put our lives on hold until this guy has been caught. we all know the guy isnt stupid, so what are the chances of him hitting a school when he knows there are going to be policemen swarming the place? we would only be playing along to his game if we continue along this path. frankly, i find this entire situation only reflects poorly on the school board's judgement, and i am sorely disappointed, as well as sorely sorry for the seniors who are playing in this year's game.

darn.....no varsity football players will be seen? That's not fair to us girls. NO damien...no ricky....no felix??? this is horrible.....please don't cancel anything...dances and games are a healthy outlet for students....we can't let some psycho run our lives! that's what he wants....this would give him the power. And besides...we are safe inside.

I agree completely with the comments of angry senior. This man, essentially, is a terrorist. We Americans are beginning to get over the "when will the terrorists strike again" phase. We can't go into total submission due to the actions of one man.
The big assumption here is that this guy will get caught sooner or later, and it's perfectly fine until then. But this is something that could take a very long time. Does MCPS plan to forego all sporting events, all outdoor activities, etc. until then?
I am rather appalled that someone grabbing a gun and killing a few people can cause the population of several communities to go into almost complete submission. We should not be afraid to walk out our front door.
A learned man once said that courage is not letting your actions be determined by your fears.

    Kevin--

This is coming from Mr. Mathwin through me. The update time should read p.m., not a.m. In the lead, after cancelled, change "and will possibly" to "but it may." In the first sentence, put a comma after "November 1."

Now what about those of us who are Procrastinats and didn't get our tickets for one reason or another. Since the dance is postponed does that mean for us people who are just NOW getting to it gonna be able to get tickets for this later date?
  • Student on October 11, 2002
The pep rally was going to suck anyways cause Gainous took out the diva dancers and the step team. Which he had no right in doing because we have a sponser. It's also not right because the hispanic girls couldn't dance in pep rally but yet last year the African club did there dance in pep rally.
  • Jared Sagoff (View Email) on October 11, 2002
As much as we may not like accepting an unpleasant truth, the MCPS administration had NO CHOICE but to postpone homecoming. With a lunatic sniper on the loose, they couldn't afford to take even the remotest of chances. IF something happened (and I acknowledge it's a remote IF), MCPS would be taking incredible amounts of flak for not preventing a preventible tragedy.

Plus, really, what's the downside? All that happens is that you're going to have to put off your bumping, freaking, and grinding for two weeks. Sheesh, what's the big deal?

The last thing the school system wants on their hands is a dead student. As long there is a credible threat to the life of their students, they cannot accept liability for our well being. They wish to avoid a death, and a crippling law-suit which would likely accompany it.

I think Mr. Gainous was totally crossing the line by canceling the pep rally. I am not so upset because there is no game or dance but still he took something that we look forward to throughout the year and cancelled it just because we take pride in our classes. I dont know, maybe it's just me but not many other schools have pride like we do and i think he is sucking it out of us. And i disagree with the fact that the Divas, Step team, and the breakdancers have been taken out of the pep rally due to Mr. Gainous. I am on a team and even i think that they should perform despite that Mr. Gainous thinks that the sports teams are the focus of the pep rally. Even when the teams go up, you cant understand what they say because the microphones suck so bad. I think they add the hype to the pep rally because everyone looks forward to the new dance that or the Divas are doing. I think Mr. Gainous is too worried about his image and reputation around the county that he fails to realize what we really want. Right now, he is slowly taking the few fun things we have in high school and throwing them down the toilet.I just had to get my two cents in.....DONT GET SCURRED.....YOU CANT STOP 04'

i dunno about the rest of ya'll, but there has been smoke comin out of my angry ears for a while now. how dare some screwed-up-in-the-head bastard kill innocent people and disrupt our lives?

i've said it before and i'll say it again: is being afraid to stand at a gas station for fear of being shot-is that life? is walking out of school with your head spinning cuz you're looking around so quickly and walking zigzagged in an attempt to protect yourself-is that life? waiting 3 years to be a senior, to scream out your year at your pep rally, to play your clarinet in the marching band at your first pep rally as a senior, and then to have it all cancelled-is that life? to open up the tv and all you hear is white truck and sniper and yet another yet another YET ANOTHER OH GOD WHEN WILL IT END!?!?!!?!?!!?!?!!? is that life? HELL NO THAT AIN'T LIFE!!!!!

and the worst thing is, the police still have no clue as to what this person is after---all we know is that we have to take precautionary measures and disrupt our lives and sit and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING while this psycho bastard runs rampant all over the place.

    this aint life, folks!

will any of us ever be able to stand at a gas station again, walk across the street again, even after they catch this crook? i bet not.

you've got little children getting stomach aches before school starts becuase they are absolutely terrified---what happened to the children having innocent lives? last year they were put through sept 11th, this year, they're being put through a psycho %$#%^#$ who's picking victims at random and whoops---what if that victim was little so-and-so's relative? how does mommy or daddy explain to a little kid what is going on, what those images are that they are forever bombarded with. i see my little sister's face when she watches the news and i shut the tv, and just the absolute sadness on her face makes me want to go out there and...and...i dunno, do something horrible to that sorry s.o.b., just for making the little children scared. or for killing all those poor people who were going about their daily business. or for ruining so many kids' senior years. or for causing so many people so much pain.

i am not a morbid person, or a negative person, but even my sunshiney-ness is at quite a low ebb right now. the mix of the weather and the psycho and the cancellations and your regular senior burdens is just hanging over my head like a damn storm cloud that broke last week when i first heard about the shootings and keeps on breaking every time i hear about a new one. i wish to God that i could do something. i dont give a damn about the reward money; i just want life to go back to normal for all of us. i dont want to be scared anymore. i dont want to be mad anymore. and i SURE AS HELL DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT ANY MORE SHOOTINGS!!!!!!!! one thing i want to hear, and when i hear this, oh dear God it will be music to my ears when i hear that they have caught this bastard and that he will PAY a very expensive price. yes, he will pay, he will pay, and when they are through with him here, he will pay in hell!!!!!!! he will burn and he will rot in hell and the pain that we feel will be intensified ten times over and he will know the true pain that he has caused us all!!!!!!! HE WILL %$%$^%%^$ PAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(ok, again i apologize for my ranting and raving, but once again i am speaking for the families of the victims-they need to be spoken for.)

i think that it was unfair that the pep rally was cancelled. I have to agree that we were a little out of hand today because last wasn't nearly as crazy as it was this year. it think it's more of the freshmen faults because they are soooo immature.

  • Senior on October 12, 2002
Gainous had every right to cancel the pep rally. If people want to act stupid, and i'm not saying the seniors weren't doing anything but its mostly ya'll younger classmen that don't know how to act, then its gonna get cannceled. Simple as that. You act like a jack@ss and you're gonna be treated like one. So why don't some people try to grow up now hmm? But about the divas and breakers...Mr Gainous definatly should have let them perform and there are ways the rest of us can come together and try to convince him of that. So why don't you all start thinking before complaining? And don't complain unless you're willing to do something to fix it!
  • anonymous on October 12, 2002

8 dead, 2 wounded. 10 days. An AVERAGE of one shooting per day! This guy obviously wants to be caught. We gotta do everything and anything to catch him. We need John Walsh. We need President Bush. We need everybody! This is unprecedented. Don't go telling me about the Boston Strangler, Son of Sam, Zodiac murderer, etc. They killed fewer people over a longer period of time, and there was something about the victims related (eg Son of Sam victims were blonde females). The guy here is worse. I say we don't give him the death penalty. We do what they did in the movie The Princess Bride "I'll cut off your legs, arms, nose, hair, eyes, and tongue; I'll leave your ears so you can hear children scream as they look at your hideous body."

Hey! I have a good idea! We should set up something at MBHS so we can collect $$$ to donate to the reward fund. A good goal would be $1 per student. That's over $3,000 bucks!

I do agree with Gainous' decision...better safe than sorry ya know..don't wanna see any peeps get hurt or trampled, regardless of their graduating class

The suicide bombers in Israel like to target buses, which is not good for that country's transportation system. Near Washington, D.C., a sniper or snipers shoots random victims to death, so major events like dances and football are cancelled. Some students at Blair misbehave, so a pep rally is cancelled. In all three cases, violence is affecting that pattern of lives of many people.

Ignoring the loud noise, the pep rallies of the last few years have been peaceful. Now add a mob of students to the pep rally. Here are groups of students attacking groups of students. Punching and fighting occurs. Someone knocks down a speaker and throws it at a crowd. Basketballs become grenades. The marching band's instruments become swords. Instead of letting this happen, it makes since to cancel the pep rally . . .

For a fight to occur, there either has to be a motive or the attacker has to be rather dumb. The sniper(s) might fit into the dumb category. The Israeli buses might blow up because someone hates Israel. Blair students form mobs because . . . what have I observed lately? Look at some of the other comments posted on this article, and I see the four grade levels (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006) accusing each other of causing the pep rally cancellation.

There are also comments from people angry at the sniper. There is a difference between being angry at the sniper and being angry at the class of 200X. The sniper is a murderer, a criminal. Even our government is willing to punish him. The class of 200X, is a diverse group of students, with a few that participate in violence: but most of them are just interested in a safe, peaceful high school. Get angry at persons at a certain grade level is like racism. It doesn't work.

What should we do, other them to claim that "my class of 200Y is better than 200Z" while ignoring the violent morons that happen to be in the class of 200Y? Some people suggest to redirect our anger at accusations at another high school, as was done in a previous pep rally. I do not support this. This is like going to a rally for the U.S. Olympic team, and throwing insults at Canada. Instead, students at MBHS should promote their school as a safe, reasonable learning (and entertainment) environment.

While disappointed, I think it was fair for Mr. Gainous to cancel the pep rally because of the riots on Blair Boulevard during 5B lunch. We shouldn't be acting like that and should compose ourselves better.

I agree that the dancers should be put back in the pep rally!! Usually, the sports teams just huddle in a group and scream things into the microphone that I never understand anyway, the dancers are entertaining to watch and really show blazer pride!

they cancelled our pep rally...our first pep rally as seniors...because there were ppl outta control. what about all the other years? what about the class of '01 throwin toilet paper around? or 00 runnin around with the freshmen's banner-if i remember correctly. what then? i dont think it was ONLY because ppl were outta control, i think it was that everything was just foaming and foaming and about to boil over: the attacks, the cancellation of the game and of homecoming...ppl were pissed and they didnt know how to react any better than how they did. it might have been more magnified this yr becuase of what's goin' on. we just have to be patient, ya'll. and to the homz of 03: we got this far, guys. we gotta take it like it comes, just let it all roll off our backs, cuz freakin about it and actin like babies isnt going to do A THING, i can assure you.

Some of the administrators and security guards may piss me off, but I'll always have respect for Mr. Gainous. This is coming from a guy who was sent to his office towards the end of 5b on friday and waited 45 minutes for him there.

He told me that every year before pep rallies kids get rowdy, but this was the first time he saw the situation as dangerous. I don't think it's very hard to side with him on this one. The mob during lunch and the previous fights between 06 and 05 make it clear. Gainous always has a reason for doing things, and it's never just to piss you off.

As for the dancers, I'm not sure why they were cut, perhaps it was time constraints. Anyway, I'm sure there was a logical reason, and even if it isn't a fair one you hear the other side of the story before whining.

My fellow seniors, don't get bummed, what all of this means is that we'll probably get to do everything over again, spirit week and all. It's dissapointing, yes, but I'm guessing most of us enjoyed our weekends regardless.

So I don't want to hear any more Gainous bashing. Go Blair Football.

  • Katie (View Email) on October 14, 2002
06 rules.....yea right. for u to think that u are so smart and mature and to brag about it to the rest of us just proves what we already thought: you're not as smart and mature as u think. maybe not at all. u don't know me, u don't know my friends, and u don't know most of the ppl at blair, so u certainly wouldn't know that we are very intelligent and mature when we feel like being mature and that we wouldn't be so immature as to start "rowdy behavior" that would get the pep rally cancelled. I would bet money that the students involved in that were freshmen. I'm pissed, too, that everything was postponed and that a lot of people's hard work was ruined. But I'm not tellin everyone else they suck cuz I think I'm smarter than them or whatever. You have no right to think you're so much better than the rest of us, cuz u most definately are not.

Like others commented, you cant ever hear what the teams say on teh crappy mics. Gainous is lunchin. A principal who everyone says supports and advicates for his students is not letting them perform? DIVAS, STEP TEAM, and BREAKDANCERS can only be hiligted at the pep rallies and their competions... the team s have their games.

I don't really see what so wrong with a little compatition between the grades, i mean come on, it's not going to hurt anyone. Seriously is people cheering for their grade a dangerous situation? its all for fun, when was the last time a little noise hurt anyone?
But on the other hand things like fights whatnot are just stupid; people think its funny and its really not,it just makes things worse. They just need to realize that it just makes them look really bad when people find out they started the problems.

I went back deep into the archives of sco to find this article and after reading what 'enigma' said i see that you guys were hardcore back then and really took freshman hell week seriously, unlike now when rarely does anything big happen. I just wish things could go back to the way you guyz had it where the seniors were able to pull off major stunts and the school was not so worried about protection the feelings of every student and just let everything play out on its own like it should in a normal high school environment. I love you guys '00 and '01 for the stunts u pulled and I salute u for your bravery. To the class of '07 and all senior classes afterwards: you all better step it up to the level of the old schoolers.
