America's loss

Sophia Deng, Online Managing Editor
When 23-year-old Kris Allen was named the eighth American Idol Wednesday night over 27-year-old Adam Lambert, my jaw dropped to the ground. Stepping closer to the TV in disbelief, I gripped the black box, waiting for Ryan Seacrest to yell "April Fools!" But as the name "Kris" flashed onto the screen, reality hit. Hard.

Putting my love for Lambert aside, I believe that both guys deserved to be in the top two seats. Talented and friendly, Lambert and Allen had the "it" factors that could potentially sell records. They were the best of the Top 13 contestants, and they earned their high standings in the competition. While Allen had a great sense of musicality, Lambert could "sing his face off," according to judge Randy Jackson.

But to me, Lambert's "it" shone brighter and bolder than Allen's. In terms of who was fresher and more unique, Lambert won hands down. His glam rock style is different from anything we hear today. Allen's acoustic sound, on the other hand, has been already seen, already done.

Though Lambert is more unique, I do understand that Allen's voice and music may have more "listenability" and appeal. He sounds mellow and safe, conservative and soft. Allen is the "guy-next-door;" Lambert is the coyote-howling, glam-fabulous "guyliner."

Yet this is exactly what bothers me the most about Allen's win. I believe that America is unable to accept radical and extreme Idols, preferring those who are more traditional. Across the years, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood have all been nice and safe "American Idol" choices. Ruben Studdard, the personable and cuter contender of Season Two prevailed over Clay Aiken. Aiken was doubtlessly the better singer, but in 2003, he was the more extreme choice.

Although Lambert and Allen's voices played a role in the final vote, I believe that America also took image into account. I know for a fact that Lambert's image, consisting of black nail polish and punk-rock clothing, alienated many conservative and older voters, in additional to many male viewers. In contrast, Allen's boring jeans and white T-shirts gave him a sweet and cute image that charmed and enticed.

Mad as I am that America did not realize Lambert's talent, every situation, including this one, has a silver lining. As runner-up, Lambert is not bound by the "American Idol" contract like Allen is. He is now free, and able to sign deals, contracts and records without the show's limits. Just as former Idol Chris Daughtry lost, but is now far more successful than fifth season winner Taylor Hicks, I predict that Lambert will have a similarly successful fate despite his this loss. He may have lost the battle, but he has not lost the war. Lambert can take lesson from Daughtry and keep on fighting: It's not over.

Yeah...but...those high notes are like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. To me, he is a really great actor playing the role of a singer.
    • Oh Yeah? on May 25, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Know music much??? Hmmm...NOT!!!! You're weird to be reading articles about Adam when you don't even like the person!!! Pathetic!!!!

Adam is AMAZING@! The high notes are the envy of every artist and the source of derision from the haters who can't find anything else to talk about other than lame talking points.

    Who cares
    • Oh Yeah? on May 25, 2009 at 11:50 PM
You?!!! because you're reading everything about Lambert!!!

actually, I just clicked on this article to see what was on silverchips, and don't support any particular person in this debate. I'm kind of mad that American Idol is the reason so many good tv shows got cancelled this season (Pushing Daisies, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, etc.) Just because American Idol does good in the ratings doesn't mean that everyone watches it.

i agree. both guys are great singers, but i think adam is a better musician. you really feel a lot of emotion every time he sings. but you're right about him not being bound by the idol contract. i think this whole thing actually worked out pretty well for them.

and they both make kinda funny faces when they sing. anyone else notice that? :)

How can Adam be a better musician he doesn't play anything.
  • Ailu on May 25, 2009 at 8:46 PM
Wow, nobody, I think you hit the nail on the head there. That is absolutely true.

Singing is obviously objective, but I can't understand how anyone could not like his high notes. I love his softer songs as well, but his upper register is insane, and it puts him in a category (not saying he's as good as these people yet, but he has the potential to be) with greats like Freddy Mercury, Steven Tyler, etc.

    To each their own. :)

      You're so right on, Jane!!!!

You said it, Ms. Deng. America wanted someone "non-threatening", whatever that means. America has a love for sameness, despite protestations to the contrary. I guess anything "different" is seen as having the potential to cause change, and change is threatening. All Kudos to Kris Allen, though. He wouldn't have won without talent. He'd have beaten Danny Gokey, too, but at least that would've been legit w/o question.

As a middle aged, married woman I was very upset that Adam didn't win. Was not surprised by it, but still upset. America is afraid of things that are out of their norm. Adam makes you feel emotions with his singing. He makes you feel alive and I would think in these troubling times that more people would respond to that. Also, looks can be deceiving. Adam is an honest, caring, loving, considerate, humble, compassionate person. He was always the first one to thank the band, the composers, the judges, even the other contestants! Didn't see anyone else doing that! Adam will have a fabulous career and will have much more artistic freedom with the Idol noose. I can not wait to see what he does. I predict we will be seeing him at the Grammy's in the near future.

What happened in Arkansas changes the debate, Adam did not lose because of Kris had more talent at singing, or questions about his sexuality, but because Kris had more talent in cheating with AT&T, sponsor for American Idol. 38 to 58 million votes from Arkansas changed the outcome. I am sure it will come to the attention of the FCC.

This whole argument about why Adam lost has begun to border on the riduculous. There was no conspiracy between AT&T and Arkansas, no votes were lost, it had nothing to do with hometown boy vs. glam. It had everything to do with styles.
Adam has a great voice and an unbelievable vocal range. However for my taste, when he sings high on a loud song, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard. On a slow song, his high notes are pitch perfect and gentle (as in Mad World). Kris, on the other hand, has a gift for interpretation. His versions of "She Works Hard for the Money", "Breathless", and "What's Going On" were well crafted and performed.
America simply preferred Kris' style to Adams, end of discussion. And since this outcome is the result of a nationwide vote of the general public, why is not the issue. The issue was that more votes went to Kris.

To a certain point, I do agree with you. Its undeniable, Americans voted for Kris's style and since Kris is someone they can most probably relate to, Kris was the obvious choice compared to Adam who wasn't the average guy but was more of a person with daring personality, eccentric performances and off-the-wall wardrobe choices. However, Adam would appeal more world wide compared to Kris who might do well in America (I am an international fan, Adam’s the buzz around here). That being said, I firmly believe Adam will do very well because hands down, he was the better singer and since AI and the whole competition is over, hopefully people will start to embrace his songs.I don't think Mary wasn’t wrong because even I did hear an official announcement that 38million votes came from Arkansas and when Kris was interviewed about it; he said he was grateful and thanks his voters. But now they retracted the statement after all the fuss. 38milion/100 million? Kris already had at least 30% from Arkansas, Adam would have needed the rest country to vote for him to win.Anyway, I'm sure both Kris and Adam will do well. So, lets not dwell in the past but support Adam in his career. His tracks are on ITUNES already. Rock on Adam!

The bottom line is that Kris Allen won because of the number of votes....and he has become the so called" American Idol"...yet I will stand alone if I have to that the true singer was Adam Lambert...and it was a singing contest...no a popularity contest, nor even a musician contest...Kris Allen is a musician and a damn good one...He plays the piano, the guitar and God only knows how many other instrumets...but apparently it wasn't about how many instruments one could play, but about how many high notes, low notes and all the notes in between that the freakin show even exists...most people forgot the point, and voted not for the most talented, but the most second talented with great muscianship...this sucks...and mama is not a happy camper....Adam was the best

    It's a travesty, really.
  • alumnae3 on May 26, 2009 at 11:25 PM
O pls. The ppl who vote 4 AI are teen girls not conservative older ppl & not males.
AI is overrated & uber annoying now anyways. That show sucks bc it has made ryan seacrest unneccesarily popular.
