Coating the holidays with warmth

by Fran Djoukeng, Online Entertainment and Sports Editor
This time of the year not only serves as a cause of celebration, but also is a season to help our neighbors and those in need around our communities. A recent episode that aired Nov. 9 on the "Tyra Banks Show" featured her partnership with clothing store Aeropostale for a "100,000 Coat Giveaway."

Banks teamed up with the store to deliver coats to underprivileged children across the United States and Canada. During the show, contestants from previous "America's Next Top Model" series delivered coats to kids in various programs and schools, to their surprise.

A total of 100,000 new, stylish black coats will be given to children in some of the coldest states in America. The talk show host made it clear that "times are tough, and every little bit helps these days." "For a lot of families, a new winter coat just isn't in the budget this year, which is why we decided to pair up with Aeropostale for the 'Tyra Show 100,000 Coat Giveaway,'" Banks said.

Banks's involvement and awareness of those in need exemplifies what needs to be done this season: sharing in a spirit of charity. It was clear from the episode how much the coats meant to these kids. More than clothing and a chance to receive something of quality, some kids appreciated the coat merely since it came from Banks's support. "The Tyra Banks Show" and Aeropostale should be applauded for their efforts. This campaign is a reminder and inspiration for those looking to lend a hand or a gift this season to someone less fortunate.

Throughout the taping, Banks reiterated the sad reality that more than four million American children are living in poverty. By teaming up with Aeropostale and showing that she cares, Banks undoubtedly brought good cheer to young people around the nation. We should all follow her lead and raise the holiday spirit in those less fortunate. Although we might not have the resources comparable to the scale of a mega apparel-retailer or superstar, plenty can be done to help others during the winter months. Whether its donating nicely worn pieces of clothing, taking time to assist in a soup kitchen or extending talents a needy neighbor, everyone can chip in. As the sunsets come quicker and days grow colder, the "100,000 Coat Giveaway" stands as a model for charity. Every coat and every deed counts.
