This year’s STEM fair included STEM clubs and honors societies

On March 15, Montgomery Blair hosted its annual STEM fair. STEM-related clubs and groups advertised to prospective members by hosting games, demos and activities as well as distributing flyers throughout Blair Boulevard.

In the SAC, Blair’s robotics team (Blair Robot Project) held a demo of their outreach robot designed to collect and launch plastic balls. Students could control the robot on their own using provided controllers. Blair Robotics is focused on competing at “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” (FIRST) robotics challenges. Those interested in joining Blair Robotics can go to room 361 Tuesdays and Thursdays, or email blair.robot@gmail.com

Green Club advertised to students through a fun trivia-based game on computers. Green Club allows students to engage with improving the school’s sustainability and members can choose a variety of advocacies to focus on. "[Everyone can] pick what they want to focus on in various committees that we have,” senior Evan Wilson said. Those interested in joining Green Club can visit room 331 on Fridays during lunch.

In addition to clubs, multiple honors societies also participated in the fair. Blair’s National Black Society of Engineers and Black Engineer of the Year Award (NSBE & BEYA) hosted a tower building competition where students used marshmallows and toothpicks to attempt to build the highest tower. "[NSBE and BEYA] explores STEM career paths like engineering [and] different hands-on activities like catapult building and competitions,” junior Caleb Kebele said. Those interested in joining should consult Mr. Demma in room 352.

Science National Honors Society (SNHS) ran a cup pong competition where students competed to win candy. "[SNHS] goes to STEM events, prepares events for the community and tutors students during lunch,” junior Anagha Bhuvanagiri said. Those interested in joining must apply at the beginning of the next school year with Ms. Earle.

Math Honors Society (MHS) held a button-making event where students were encouraged to make their own math themed buttons. MHS supports outreach events in local elementary and high schools, hosts math-related events, and offers math tutoring. Those interested in joining MHS can apply at the beginning of the next school year with Ms. Contreras.
