Wheaton's defense unable to stop Blair attack

Sept 30, BLAZER STADIUM—

Amid the encouraging calls of the crowd, one onlooker in tonight's field hockey game remarked that the Blazers were finally playing up to the potential they had been promising all season. The passes were on target, the drives up the field were strong, and the Blazers were able to finish, allowing a 2-1 victory over Wheaton.

Louis Hoelman, who coached the JV field hockey team last year and was present at tonight's game, said that he thought the girls played a solid game against Wheaton. "They are looking good tonight, staying spread out, hustling, and playing with intensity," said Hoelman.

Sophomore Julie Spatz stood out in the game. She had a number of fast breaks in the first half, one of which led to an early 1-0 Blazer lead. ILate in the game, with the match tied at 1-1, Spatz scored again off of a pass from co-captain Kamala Smith, breaking the tie and winning the game for the Blazers.

The entire team was much more aggressive in tonight's game than in itd previous few. Blair was hampered at times by a lack of on-field communication. However, the Blazers were the more aggressive team in the midfield and made smarter passes, which ultimately won them the game. Coach Amy Von Schirach noted the elevated level of play that the girls showed tonight. "They crossed the ball well, brought it up well, and had good drives," said Von Schirach.

At the games conclusion the Blazers walked off the field with their heads held high and smiles across their faces. Von Schirach was no exception, smiling and joking around with the rest of the team. 'I'm always happy with a victory," she said.

Blair's next game is on Oct 4. Come support them in Blazer Stadium as they take on the Paint Branch Panthers.
