Loss of key Blazers must be matched by talented newcomers for team to be successful

Following a disappointing 6-8 record last season and the loss of a few key players, including leading scorer John Selby, the varsity boys' lacrosse team is looking to revamp both the offense and defense.
Senior co-captain Kyle Cohen has termed this year "a new beginning" for the team.

Robert Gibb, who has been coaching the team since the program was started at Blair six years ago, agrees with Cohen. "The reality is for four straight years we pretty clearly improved each and every year. Last year we kind of stumbled a bit, but we played tougher opponents," he explained.

Gibb has pinned much of this year's potential success on this year's four experienced captains: Seniors Josh Gottlieb-Miller and Cohen will generate consistent offense on attack, senior Alex Berger will be the stronghold in the midfield, generating plays and scoring opportunities, and junior Erik Kojola will anchor the defense, Gibb said.

Gibb also has hope in the new talent coming in. Seniors Jonathan Gregory and Mike Hayes are new to the sport but are already showing tremendous talent. "They are leaders, and they make up for their newness to the sport with athleticism," he said.

Despite early apprehension about the strength of the team, Cohen and Gibb are looking forward to what they believe will be a decent season. "We lost big players [last year], and we had a whole lot of freshmen coming out," explained Cohen, "but these kids seem to have good sticks."
