Senior scoring overcomes Titan opposition
The varsity girls' lacrosse team (8-3) defeated Einstein (4-7) on senior night 15-5. The senior girls dominated the offense, scoring 11 out of 15 goals for the team. Senior captains Molly Branson, Nellie Garlow and Emily Hedrick scored three goals each. Senior Sarah Frank scored two goals.
The beginning of the game was close before the Blazers broke away and brought up the score to a wider margin at the end of the first half. Einstein came out with energy, aggressively scoring a goal in the first five minutes. Branson retaliated immediately with a fast breakaway goal. Frank and Branson each scored, bringing the score to 3-1.
After Einstein managed to tie the score at 3-3, the Blazers got down to business, scoring five more goals and ending the half with a score of 8-3. According to junior defender Christina Stiles, Einstein's game-tying goals woke up the team and made them focus more. "Plus it was senior night," she said. "I knew the seniors would not let us lose."
Head coach Michael Horne said that excitement over senior night contributed to less organized play in the first half. "There was a lot of excitement about the game tonight," he said. "It took us a while to settle in." Stiles agreed, saying, "The second half was completely different. We brought the intensity we were missing the first half."
Einstein head coach Suzanne Murray said that the Titans were hoping to have a competitive game with Blair. According to Murray, although her team evened the score with Blair in the first 15 minutes, Einstein eventually succumbed to Blair's offensive tactics. "Blair's pressure threw us off our game," she said. "When the pressure starts coming, that's when mistakes happen."
After the game the team gathered to celebrate the graduating seniors: Garlow, Frank, Laura Li, Tiffany Chang, Alaina Briceland-Betts, Jill Maree Lidsky, Branson, Hedrick and Annie Buckley. Although the team will be losing nine seniors, Horne is proud of their successful season and confident that the team will carry on.
The last regular game of the season is against Damascus on Saturday. According to Horne, Damascus will be a tough opponent. After the playoff draw will take place early next week, the Lady Blazers will find out their first opponent in the playoffs.
