A trio of mariachi musicians begin the festivities dedicated to celebrating Hispanic culture

On Monday, Sept. 17, a mariachi band gathered in the Student Activity Center to perform traditional music and kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on Sept. 15. The four members played catchy, upbeat tunes with classic mariachi instruments including a violin, trumpet, guitar and the Mexican guitarrón as students entered the building.

Principal Renay Johnson believed inviting the band would serve as a grand opening to the important occasion and allow Hispanic students to feel confident and embrace their cultural identity.

"I told [the committee] that my vision was to kick off [Hispanic Heritage Month] with a bang, and they thought of the band. It was really great this morning, and that's what I wanted, for our students to feel the pride of Hispanic Heritage month," Johnson said.

Johnson looks forward to the rest of the month and believes that it serves as a valuable opportunity to appreciate the diversity of Blair.
