Forfeit propels Blair into second round of playoffs

The Blair Community ice hockey team is not affiliated or sponsored by the Montgomery Blair High School athletic program or Montgomery County Public Schools. The team is an independent group of Blair students.

The Blair Community Ice Hockey team was given a second life as Broadneck forfeited their first round victory over Blair. Thus Blair will play at least one more game this season as they advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

Blair will take the ice again against a second seeded Howard team on Friday, Feb. 18 at Laurel Ice Rink at 4:15 p.m. Broadneck was forced to forfeit their earlier 8-5 victory over Blair on Feb. 15 because they reported using an ineligible player to the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League (MSHL). MSHL officials quickly reversed the games decision and sent Blair into the second round of the playoffs.

The team members were surprised by the news when they found out that their season was still alive Thursday afternoon. The players vowed to make the most of the opportunity and said they were not threatened by playing a number two seed despite Blair being seeded 18th.
