West Side Story makes history

The spring musical West Side Story became the best selling play in Blair history making over 19 thousand dollars.

The play, which sold out all four nights it was performed, was overwhelmingly successful. On opening night alone, the ticket sales from West Side Story totaled nearly 5 thousand dollars. The first weekend made 10,852 dollars and the second weekend made 8,852 dollars. The total profit from the play was 19,704 dollars.

According to director Kelly Newman,West Side Story financially topped Blair's last hit musical Guys and Dolls, which held the previous record for total sales of approximately 14 thousand dollars.

Newman thought the play was not only successful financially but also "artistically and emotionally."
