Weather conditions delay Friends of Sligo Creek's September event

Due to weather conditions, Friends of Sligo Creek (FoSC) has postponed its third annual Sweep the Creek event until tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 19 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The group decided late last night that due to the uncertain weather and heavy likelihood of rain through today, the clean-up should be postponed. Tomorrow, children and adults are invited to pick up trash along Sligo Creek, an event that has previously been scheduled for today, Saturday, Sept. 18 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Tomorrow, after the clean-up, there will be a celebration at 11:30 a.m. in which prizes will be awarded to the group who collects the most trash and finds the weirdest item, among other categories. Refreshments will be provided, free frisbees will be available to take home, and speakers will talk to the group about various issues. Special treasures will also be hidden for children to find. The gathering will take place at the playground near the intersection of Sligo Parkway and Kennebec Road between Maple Avenue and Piney Branch Road.

Last year, 200 people attended the event, and this year the group hopes to double this figure. The plan is for individuals and families to meet at the sign-in table in their assigned areas to receive directions and supplies including bags, gloves and water. It is suggested that participants wear long sleeves and pants as well as bring waterproof boots and gloves if possible.
