FEB. 21, MLK SWIM CENTER-

Tyler Wilchek and Patrick Detzner placed second and third in the 50-yard freestyle event at the Montgomery County Championship meet on Saturday. Wilchek was one of only two swimmers to record a time under 23 seconds, a threshold he broke for the first time last weekend at divisionals. "[Wilchek] is in the very top tier in the 50 freestyle," says coach David Swaney. "He just keeps getting faster and faster."

Detzner improved from a 23.50 second seed time to 23.36 in the 50 free, and kicked to a surprising eighth-place finish in the 500 free on Thursday Feb. 19. Detzner swam the 500 to give sophomore Bryan Erickson a final chance to qualify for Metros in the 100 free. Erickson dropped 2.24 seconds to beat the cutoff time and earned a sixteenth-place finish.

Detzner, who swam the 500 free for Blair only once in the regular season, knocked 15 seconds off his seed time. He and freshman David Vuong both beat Vuong's Blair record for the event, set earlier this season. Vuong won a seventh-place, 5:03.05 second finish and Detzner was right behind him with a time of 5:03.39.

Junior captain Ari Halper-Stromberg continued to improve his 100 butterfly time with a 56.53 second, fifth-place finish, now 3.76 seconds under the Metro cutoff.

Senior Captain Robin Hernandez rocketed to an eleventh-place finish in the 50 free, breaking a three-year-old Blair record with a time of 26.61 seconds. Hernandez failed to improve on her seed time for the 100 free and missed her last chance to qualify for Metros in that event.

Junior captain Kendra Williams, junior Karima Tawfik, and sophomore Kelsey Dean all earned points for Blair by placing in the top 16 in each of their events. While Williams knocked 0.22 seconds off her 100 fly time, most of the girls failed to record personal-best times today, in contrast with the boys.

Blair's top swimmers and divers will compete at the Metro Swimming and Diving Championships at the Montgomery Aquatic Center on Thursday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, Feb. 28.
