Senior locker distribution begins

The business office has completed processing Senior Locker Share Forms and is requesting that seniors report to the concession stand during lunch for their locker assignments.

Due to a shortage of approximately 300 lockers, Blair seniors have been granted the "privilege of sharing them with other seniors," according to Business Manager Anne Alban.

Seniors were informed of the shortage in homeroom on the first day of school and were asked to complete a Senior Privilege/Locker Share Form indicating whether they would prefer to share a locker, have a single, or not have one at all.

Alban attributes the shortage of lockers to Blair's overpopulation. "We're over the projected number of students," she said, "and we don't have enough lockers to accommodate for everyone."

Blair, which currently only has $14,000 available, is hoping to deal with this problem without purchasing additional lockers, which would be a "$40,000 expenditure," according to Alban.

Many seniors were angered not only by the shortage, but also by Blair's attempt to portray the option of sharing a locker as a privilege. "The whole situation was pretty stupid," said senior Max Pollock. "They were just trying to cover up their mistake by calling it a privilege."

Seniors, however, are not the only ones affected by the locker shortage. According to Alban, sophomores and juniors who do not use their lockers have been asked to give them up. "The process has been slightly different this year," she said. "Teachers have been instructed to ask if any 10th or 11th graders were willing to give up their lockers."

Although a Blair security official, who did not wish to be named, claims that lockers have been assigned to all juniors, some have been left without them. "I understand the school's situation," said Tim Yang, one of the juniors without a locker, "but if I need a locker, I should have the right to get one."

Under the current plan, seniors will be allotted lockers on the first floor, while sophomores and juniors will be given lockers on the third floor. All freshmen will be placed on the second floor in order to keep them near their administrators.

Alban is hoping that the opening of Northwood High School will help alleviate Blair's current dilemma. "When Northwood opens, we should be able to get rid of this problem," said Alban, "we just don't want to have to buy the new lockers right now."
