Yenika Fon stars for boys' soccer team

The Blair Blazers boys' varsity soccer team was down 2-1 to the
Gaithersburg Trojans mid-way through the second half. Senior
co-captain Yenika Fon limped back onto the field after suffering and
injury. Fon immediately received the ball and made a spectacular run
down the left flank and crossed the ball to an on rushing Blair
forward who placed the ball in the back of the net.

Fon's assist gave the Blazers momentum in the game and they would go
on to win the game 4-2. After the play Fon came off the field to rest
his ailing leg, but not until he helped change the course of the game.

Fon has been an emotional leader for the boys' soccer team playing both
defense and forward. His great speed has been vital in shutting down opposing teams forwards while playing defense. Fon has also been an offensive threat when Blair coach, Adrian Baez, moves Fon up to forward to help spark the Blazer offense. During the regular season he has had two assists and had four goals playing up top during the preseason.

In ninth and tenth grade Fon played forward for the JV soccer team,
but has moved to defense to benefit the varsity team, even though it
limits his scoring opportunities. Fon feels that playing defense has
helped his overall soccer skills and is the best thing for the team.
He has had to learn how to control the entire team from his sweeper
position and adjust to being the last man on defense.

Fon believes the team can overcome their difficulty of always losing in the
second round of the playoffs. According to Fon the squad is playing
better team soccer than the previous season. "We are much smarter and
we work together as a team better than last year," said Fon.

Individually, Fon has improved coming into his senior season by playing
on a select club team, Argyle F.C., in the off-season and working on
his physical conditioning. Fon hopes his commitment to soccer will
pay off by getting recruited to play at the Division I collegiate
level.

Fon genuinely enjoys the game of soccer and looks forward to practice
everyday to play and compete against his teammates. "I need soccer
because it is my life. It is what I think about most after
education," said Fon.
