Students raise money to send to the National Children's Medical Center
From Dec. 11 to 19, Blair's Student Government Association (SGA) ran a Holiday Hope Week in which they sold candy with all proceeds being donated to the National Children's Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Blair students also contributed cards with holiday greetings which will be sent to the patients at the hospital.
SGA members had candy canes and cards available at a table right outside of the cafeteria during both lunches. To better describe the purpose behind the candy, the SGA is calling them, "Candy for a Cure." Blazers can purchase their candy canes to send to a teacher, friend or themselves.
Blair students were encouraged to come up and make personalized cards or a holiday greeting for patients in the hospital. The aim of the program is to bring joy to the children in the hospital during the holiday season. "We want them to know that people are thinking about them. We hope that the cards will make them smile," SGA member Julia Audet said.
The SGA decided to donate the funds to the National Children's Medical Center because it is very close to one of the SGA member's heart. The co-organizer, junior Ariel Blakey, worked at the hospital. She thinks the hospital will make great use of the money. "They are a very supportive staff and they really deserve the funds," she said. The funds raised would be divided up among wards in the hospital. "I think that the money and cards will go to the cancer ward and a few others, but it is up to the hospital to decide, "Blakey added.
SGA members agreed that the holidays are a perfect time to organize the program. "The holidays are about giving hope and that is exactly what we are doing," co-organizer, Sammy Wichansky said.
SGA members explained that they would love to personally deliver their earnings. "If possible that would be great, but it is up to the hospital," Wichansky said.
