Mihyar Alnifaidy, a junior at Springbrook High School, won the election for the 25th Student Member of the Montgomery County Board of Education (SMOB) on Apr 24. Alnifaidy received over 70 percent of the vote, a particularly large margin of victory.

Alnifaidy, who came to the United States from France in 1993, said that he has long been interested in public service. "Ever since I was very young, I have been fascinated by politics," said Alnifaidy. "I have always wanted to become involved in politics any way I can."

Although he has a broad agenda for his one-year tenure as SMOB, Alnifaidy feels his most important responsibility is to make sure students' voices are heard. "Most of all, I want to represent the views and opinions of all students in MCPS," said Alnifaidy.

Other initiatives, such as lessening class sizes, implementing a "double A exam exemption" policy and creating a mandatory countywide school recycling program, comprise Alnifaidy's platform. Alnifaidy hopes to accomplish at least a few of these objectives, even though the SMOB does not have a vote on the Board.

Alnifaidy ran against Alex Sellinger, a junior from Walt Whitman High School.
