Unlike last year, the snow days are starting to pile up. Montgomery County has already spilled over the four snow day limit and the school system is canceling school yet again. Students had Monday off for President's Day, and the long weekend was extended to five days as MCPS canceled school for Tuesday and yet again for today. Plows have had a tough time getting to the side streets, and it looks like it may be yet another day before students can get to the bus stop.

Here's what Weather.com is predicting:

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until noon on Monday

Totals as of Tuesday afternoon in Silver Spring, MD: 25 inches!

The Silver Chips Online Weather Team predicts: 50% chance of cancellation on Thursday. According to Magnet research teacher Mark Curran, Blair is still "snowed under" -- the only area that has been plowed is a small pass in the bus lane. No parking lots are open and the snow on the sidewalks is still knee-deep. Snow plows will have all today to work, but it appears that they may not be able to clear Blair or many side streets in time for school on Thursday.

Also, forecasters are predicting more light snow mixed with sleet tonight. Not enough to cancel school normally, but considering that it's falling on already-large piles of snow and already-slick roads, it might just be the icing on the cake.

If school is cancelled again on Thursday, two days will be trimmed off of spring break. However, MCPS is seeking a waiver that would allow the school system to not make up missed days caused by this storm. The State of Maryland says it will consider each county's waiver application on a case-by-case basis.

Check the Silver Chips Online weather page for additional information, including a link to real-time weather conditions at Blair.

MCPS weather policies can be found on its emergency information page.

snoWatch discussion: Should MCPS seek a waiver so that missed days would not have to be made up?
