The new local restaurant in Takoma Park is a great place to get a cup of coffee
The Takoma Park Beverage Company (Takoma Bev Co) is a local restaurant located in Old Town Takoma Park, between a vision center and a post office. Takoma Bev Co was co-founded by Christopher Brown, a former biology teacher at Montgomery Blair High School. The restaurant has received positive reviews on Yelp since its opening in June of 2017.
Takoma Bev Co serves a variety of food and drinks. There are separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with an all day snack menu.
When I walked in the store I was greeted with a smile. The staff is extremely cordial and patient, making me feel right at home. This bistro is set up like a coffee shop-bar hybrid. To the left, there is a bar that can seat six. To the right, there are four tables that can seat four people. During busy hours the place can feel a little cramped due to the lack of space.
Takoma Bev Co offers a variety of unique foods and drinks such as espresso shortbread cookies and hand dripped coffee. However, the richness of the hazelnut Madeline made up for the underwhelming cookie. The Madeline was moist and fluffy while maintaining a strong hazelnut flavor. The top half was coated with hazelnuts, giving it a distinct crunchy texture that balanced its sponginess. The hazelnut Madeline is unique pastry that is definitely worth trying. Although Takoma Bev Co serves a variety of foods, it mainly specializes in drinks.
This cafe offers an array of coffee-based drinks while also serving teas and alcoholic beverages. The drip coffee is a medium roast with sweet, nutty undertones, on par with traditional Latin American roasts. It has a slight bittersweet aftertaste. Lovers of medium roast coffee would be satisfied with this drip coffee, but lovers of dark roasts may want to avoid this.
Instead, dark roast lovers should try the manual drip biloya sundried Ethiopian coffee. This coffee is bold, surprisingly smooth, and costs $4.25, $2 more than the drip coffee. With its strength and smoothness, it's worth the extra money. For those in need of a caffeine boost, the Ethiopian coffee is the way to go. Takoma Bev Co not only serves coffee, but a variety of espresso-based drinks such as lattes and espressos.
The cafe's lattes are topped with a cute heart-shaped foam design and taste like a Starbucks latte with more milk. For the latte lovers, this is a safe option that will not disappoint.
What sets this restaurant apart from other restaurants is the ambiance and presentation. The store feels like something straight out of Pinterest, having a rustic-meets-industrial vibe. All the tables and counters were made out of a light toned wood with unique industrial light fixtures. The coffee is served on the most adorable slates containing a mini-pitcher full of coffee and a cup.
Takoma Bev Co has delicious food and drinks, but the main draw is the homey atmosphere and Instagram-worthy coffee. Takoma Bev Co is an amazing place to have coffee and sit down with friends.
