Born in 1926, John Coltrane grew up in High Point, North Carolina. He played E-flat horn and clarinet, switching to alto saxophone at the age of 15. Coltrane studied at the Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia and served in a Navy band in Hawaii. In the late 1940s, Coltrane played for bandleaders Eddie Vinson, Jimmy Heath and Dizzy Gillespie, and in 1953, he joined the Johnny Hodges Septet, playing tenor saxophone full-time.

At the Washington Convention Center this past summer, thousands of people lined up along the sidewalk for as long as a block. Young dreamers from all over the U.S. turned out: hailing from Alaska, Ohio, California and Maryland. James Baldwin was born in 1924, the oldest of nine children, and grew up in poverty in Harlem. Early in his life, Baldwin followed in his father's footsteps and became a preacher. Baldwin's spiritual work gave him an awareness of the suffering within the black community and instilled in him a passion for writing.
