Coed Blazers lose opener

The Blair coed volleyball team lost its first game of the season tonight, 0-3, to Gaithersburg. The Blazers lost the first three sets, 13-25, 18-25, 16-25.

The Blazers simply could not keep up with the more powerful Trojans. Gaithersburg was more organized and they collapsed on the ball more quickly than the Blazers were able to.

Experience is the key to success for this year's squad. Many of the boys on the team played in their first game of volleyball tonight.

"Its tough to beat a team like Gaithersburg when you're so inexperienced," coach John Mott said. "But we never gave up, and Im proud of them for that."

One reason Gaithersburg has such a strong squad is because they do not have a boys volleyball team. This means that all of their talented male players are able to play for the coed team, a luxury that Blair does not have.

Senior Amanda Hsiung, as usual, played very well. Hsiung has been a prominant part of the Blair coed team since her freshman year, and this year is no different.

"Amanda is our floor leader," Mott noted. "She is also our setter, so she's very important to our team."

The Blazers showed tonight that they have a lot to work on, but they have the potential for success.
