The soul food chain opens up new location in Briggs Chaney
Montgomery County is getting its first Hip Hop Fish and Chicken restaurant at the Briggs Chaney Center. There are 24 other locations located in Md., and one other location in Washington, D.C. They serve fried fish and chicken entrees, soul food sides and desserts.
I'm not completely sure why it's called "Hip Hop" Fish and Chicken, there was no music in the restaurant, and the vibe was pretty dull. Keep in mind, though, that it's a new place, and they may still need to set a few things up. The menus are red and yellow, though, so their color scheme is bright.
The Fish and Chicken Combo gives you a choice of any two fish or chicken entrees with fries, coleslaw and bread for $11. There is a special with two side choice, where you can choose from certain entrees and get two sides for $11.50.
They also offer fish by the piece and chicken by the piece. Sweet potato pie, banana pudding and bean pie highlight their dessert options, which are inexpensive. They offer classic American sides like fries, onion rings, hush puppies, sweet potatoes, garden salad and more. Their appetizer section is in fact appetizing, with fried meatballs, fried pickles, jalapeno poppers, macaroni and cheese bites and more. The entrees generally fall in the price range of eight to $12, while the sides are about $3 to $5, the appetizers are about $1 to $7 and desserts are $1 to $4.
I was able to get the Fish and Chicken combo (with shrimp and catfish fillet), the special with two sides (six buffalo wings, macaroni and cheese and collard greens) and peach cobbler for just north of $25. Considering what I paid, the quality of food and the amount of food was great value. They definitely gave me a bang for my buck.
I got my food in no more than 15 minutes, and they did well with keeping the line to order moving. All the food I had was delicious, although a bit salty, was very good. It was made to order and flavorful. The peach cobbler was prepackaged (from another company), but it was very good.
The restaurant serves carryout only, and they accept both walk-in orders and phone orders. Note if you're vegetarian or want a healthy meal, do not come here, all they will have for you is green beans, coleslaw and a garden salad. If you want some quality comfort food that feels like home, this is the place for you.
