Girls overall finish in 4th place

FEB. 16, PG SPORTSPLEX-

The Blair Indoor Track team finished the Western Regional Championship today with three different girls advancing to the State Championship. Halsey and Ashlyn Sinclair together advanced in three different events: the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. Senior Tyaishia Jackson also advanced to the Championship in the 55m. The Blair girls finished 4th overall with 41 points, finsihing behind Damascus, Walter Johnson and Winston Churchill.

The Regional meet began last Monday, but due to an over hour-long power outage, the meet was canceled with some remaining events scheduled for today. Blair competed in most of the races held today including the 800m, 3200m, 4x400m and 4x200.

The Sinclairs did not run their fastest times today, but were still able to advance to the States. Ashlyn ran the 800m with a time of 2:21 and came in 2nd place while her sister finished 3rd at 2:27. Ashlyn, though, was the only one to advance to States in that competition. Halsey ran the 3200m and finished 2nd with a time of 11:51 and advanced. Her sister did not compete in the event.

The boys' team did compete today, but due to the overall youth and inexperience of the team, it failed to receive any points at the Regional meet. Sophomore Josh Uzzell finished 16th in the 800m at 2:12 and 12th in the 3200m at 10:28. Uzzell did not advance in either event.

The Blair boys finished 12th and 13th respectively in the 4x200 and 4x400. Junior Tommy Dugan, who ran in multiple events for the boys, thought that the team ran competitively. "This year we did really well as a whole," said Dugan. "While we didn't score any points, people brought their times down and that was the main point of this season."

The team overall still has many things to do in order to improve for next year. "What we really need to work on are hand-offs because they were a real source for problems, but also just general conditioning,” said Dugan.
