MAR. 1, WHITMAN- The Blazers entered the second round of the playoffs in high spirits after a resounding victory over twelfth-seeded Quince Orchard, but four seed Whitman proved to be much stiffer opposition and after a fierce back-and-forth contest the Vikings ended up 45-38 victors.

Born in 1797 in Ulster County, a Dutch settlement in upstate New York, Isabella Baumfree was one of 13 children born to slave parents. She lived with her family until she was sold off at the age of 11. Although enduring much hardship intrinsic to the times, Baumfree traveled the country inspiring others who were suffering like her and who desperately needed hope.

Even though the first full moon of the new lunar year was locked behind slate clouds as the snow sifted down in swirls, the Chinese community celebrated the Lantern Festival, the last day in the traditional 15-day celebration of the Lunar New Year, on Feb. 24 by eating dumplings and parading paper lanterns.

Assemblies were held in the auditorium last Wednesday, Feb. 23 to encourage freshmen to recycle around Blair. The event, which took place during students' Connections classes, was the first educational opportunity for students as part of the newly-established recycling education program which began second semester.

Trade deadline strengthens East

The general managers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) had a busy day on Feb. 24. Several trades occurred at the deadline to improve their team for the rest of the season or for next year by relieving the salary cap. The trade that will have the biggest impact will be the trade that sent Sacramento Kings power forward Chris Webber to the Philadelphia 76ers. This trade will be another step in balancing the Eastern conference against the West.
