SGA to hold penny drive in December

The SGA will be holding a penny drive as the featured event in the upcoming Charity Challenge starting Dec. 1, according to Christie Lin, the SGA's director of special projects. The drive will be a competition between the different grade levels to raise the most money for selected charities.
AP students may be exempt from final exams

The Board of Education has established a committee to determine if finals are necessary for those students taking AP classes and go on to take the AP exam in May. According to Maria Trementozzi, the supervisor of the county social studies department, the committee will begin making its decision in the next few weeks.
Fight breaks out in front of Media Center

A fight broke out between two male seniors in front of the Media Center during InfoFlow this morning. The fight allegedly started when one student attempted to trip the other. The fight resulted in a police filing and a hospital visit.

The PTSA will be reviewing minigrant applications next Monday, November 13 in room 164 from 3:00 p.m. to around 5:00 p.m. Members of the SGA will be assisting the PTSA with the reviewing and selecting process, but non-SGA members can also attend and earn community service hours. MCPS to hold public forums on middle school reform in upcoming weeks

MCPS will be holding two public forums for parents, staff and students to voice their opinions on the proposed MCPS plans for strengthening the middle school system. The first forum will be held on Nov. 13 at Shady Grove Middle School. A subsequent forum will be on Nov. 29 at Silver Spring International Middle School. Last May, an envelope marked ACT, Inc. arrived in senior Daniel Keller's mailbox. Putting his anxiety aside, Keller sat down on his living room couch, ripped it open and stared at its contents in shock. To his amazement, Keller scored a 34 out of a possible 36 on the ACT - a score that unofficially corresponds to a 2280 out of 2400 on the new SAT - 160 points higher than the 2120 he had scored six months before.

The 19th annual Fannie Mae Foundation Help the Homeless Walkathon will take place on the National Mall on Saturday, Nov. 18. The Walkathon is part of a campaign to raise awareness and funds for over 180 Washington metropolitan area organizations working to prevent homelessness. Fire alarm pulled during 5A lunch

An unscheduled fire alarm went off at 11:35 a.m. on Thursday, immediately following the bell that ended 5A lunch. The alarm was activated when an emergency alarm was pulled in the SAC, according to business manager James Funk. At 11:51, the building was cleared by the fire department and chief and the students were released from the stadium, where they gather during emergency evacuations. 5B lunch was not extended.

Blazer wins second place nationwide at science competition

Blair freshman Jacob Hurwitz won second place and a $10,000 scholarship at the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC) – a nationwide science competition in which students compete for the title of "America's Top Young Scientist of the Year." Fellow freshmen David Tao and Scott Yu were also among 40 finalists in the competition. Tao and Yu also did well at the challenge, which took place from Oct. 21 to 25, winning the "Discovery Times 'Tech Trip'" award and the "Discovery Health 'Forensics Camp' award," respectively.
