Are you ready for some football? SCO definitely is. With Pratik gone to who-knows-which-super-smart-college, we bring back two experts in Abe Schwadron and myself, Josh Zipin to analyze all the games on Sundays. I take pride in introducing to you our newest recruit, Pia Nargundkar"don't hate, she knows her stuff. We also bring back one lesser talent in the form of Phillip Allen (sorry, Phil). This season we will do our best to predict the Redskins all the way to the Super Bowl, and along the way hopefully win some bragging rights. I sit on the throne as last season's pick 'em champion, and I'll be there until one of these so-called "experts" knocks me off. Here are our passionate picks for the first week of NFL games.

SEPT. 6, BLAZER COURTS— A 6-1 pummeling of Division III Springbrook Blue Devils marked a strong first step for a young girls' tennis team. It was the first game for the relatively young team but will be followed by a more difficult match against Magruder's Division I squad.

The July 31 non-waiver trading deadline came and went in Major League Baseball on Monday, and despite a flurry of rumors and possible scenarios, Washington Nationals All-Star second baseman-turned-outfielder Alfonso Soriano, one of the market's hottest commodities, was not one to don a new uniform. While some may applaud this action (or lack thereof) on the part of Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden, it was an imprudent decision that will hinder the future of this organization.

On Friday, the United States Men's soccer team will make its seventh appearance in the World Cup in 70 years. Riding the wave of last World Cup's success, in which the United States outplayed a heavily favored Portuguese team, defeated their continental rivals Mexico in the second round and finally succumbed to the Germans in the quarterfinals, the US hopes to capitalize on a productive off-season and continue their World Cup run. As fate would have it, the United States was drawn into group E, one of the more competitive groupings in the tournament. Comprised of three-time champions Italy, a Czech team ranked second in the world and the dangerous Ghanaian national team, Group E will offer plenty of problems for the US squad.
NBA Finals '06 Preview

The NBA is officially in uncharted territory. Neither the Dallas Mavericks nor the Miami Heat have ever made it to the NBA Finals in their franchise histories. With Shaq now as a backseat driver to the Heat's Championship bus, Miami looks to its young phenom, Dwyane Wade (a.k.a. "Flash") to propel the team to their first title. On the other side of the court lies Dirk Nowitzki, a reformed player who now attacks the basket instead of hoisting European-style jump shots. With rookie teams in the finals, but NBA veterans facing off on the biggeset stage of them all, SCO breaks down what should be a hard-fought series.
Blazers to advance to state track meet

Four Blazers qualified for the state track meet after the 4A West regional meet held May 17 and 18 at Churchill High School. Senior Queen Momo and juniors Muhammad Roberson, Ashlyn Sinclair and Halsey Sinclair all met the time or distance requirements necessary to advance in their respective events.
Boys' volleyball wins second county championship

Blair's boys' volleyball team beat the Sherwood Warriors for the volleyball county championship round yesterday, May 18, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-18. After only three sets, the Blazers emerged victorious with their second straight title.

The Blair Athletic Department hired Mark Destefano as the varsity basketball coach. Destafano, who replaces Orlando Larraquente, held a players meeting to discuss his plans for the program on Thursday.
Girls' track places sixth in the county

After rain postponed the second part of the Montgomery County track and field championship May 11, the meet continued at 3:30 p.m. on May 12. The girls' team placed sixth overall in the county.
Boys' volleyball to play in championship round

The boys' volleyball team has done it once again. In slightly over an hour, the Blazers defeated the number three seeded Rockville Rams in a spectacular 3-0 win tonight, which means that the boys will have a chance to defend the championship title they won last year on Thursday against Sherwood.
Blair makes history out of Titans

With the fate of their season in their hands, the Blair boy's lacrosse team stepped up their play and defeated the Einstein Titans 8-2 in the first round of the playoffs. For four quarters, the Blazers played one their most complete games of the season, and Friday night's victory set up a Saturday afternoon game with Wooton in the second round.

After advancing in the first round of the playoffs against #15 seed Damascus on Tuesday, the Blair boys' volleyball team faced the #10 seed Walter Johnson Wildcats today in a bout that left the boys victorious 3-0, with an excellent record of 25-14, 25-22 and 26-24.

After last week's win over the Kennedy Cavaliers, the Blair girls' lacrosse team was raring to go tonight for their final regular season game against the Wheaton Knights. They were in good spirits and a giant sign reading "We Be Beatin' Wheaton" showed their confidence about finishing the season with a win.

MAY 9, WALTER JOHNSON GYMNASIUM— After a long night of competing against six other teams at Counties, the Blair gymnastics team left the Walter Johnson gymnasium full of hope for next year. Although there were no Blazers in the top six in any category, Blair beat Springbrook and Gaithersburg by more than 10 points. Missing some key competitors because of injuries, the Blazers felt they did their considering their situation. "I'm pretty satisfied. It wasn't a great meet but it was fun. We placed better than last year," said senior co-captain Rose Feinberg.

The Blair gymnastics team competed today against the Walter Johnson Wildcats and the Springbrook Blue Devils in a fairly even match-up. Blair took second place with 149.45 behind the strong Wildcats (169.25) and in front of the Blue Devils (115.17). Although Blair placed second, the Blazers seemed to be cursed as soon as they stepped foot into the gymnasium. Plagued by falls and injuries, Blair persevered and finished with second.

The gymnastics team persevered in a tough match-up against Sherwood and Gaithersburg high schools. This tri-meet left the Blazers feeling unsatisfied with their performances and left junior Lisa Wong with a potentially broken toe.

The Blair boys' lacrosse team lost their sixth straight on April 27, falling 11-5 to the Sherwood Warriors in a game that featured fleeting glimpses of a cohesive and productive Blair offense, but again was decided by defensive breakdowns and a lack of shots for Blair.

Lacrosse cut down by Warriors

It was the same story that has played out again and again for the girls' lacrosse team this year. The Warriors scored easily in the first minute of the game and took off from there. By the end of regulation, the Blazers had been beaten down 2-14 to extend their losing streak to nine games.
