Blazers on the crew team prepare for their spring season
Blair crew's practice schedule was put on pause on Sept. 17, 2014, by an investigation in the Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Filled with police searching for a discarded weapon, a large part of the area – including where crew keeps their boats – was off limits for the public.
On July 26, the Blair crew team picked up its third racing boat, a used 1991 Vespoli Midweight 8, at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park where the team practices. The purchase was a major accomplishment for the club team, which is funded entirely by team dues, donations and fundraising.
Last Thursday and Friday, Blair's crew team competed in the largest American high school regatta of the year, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. As a member of U.S. Rowing, Blair entered the regatta for the second year in a row. Girls Junior 4+ placed 31st out of 61 boats, Girls Senior 8+ finished 21st out of 36 boats and Boys Senior 4+ beat nine other boats.
"First of all, I don't like Frisbee, I love it. And second of all, 'Frisbee' is a wham-o disc, 'Ultimate' is a lifestyle," jokes junior Devin Rutan, a co-captain of Blair's Ultimate Frisbee team, "Home Cooked." The Ultimate team, along with crew, paddling, running, ice hockey, are Blair's club sports, meaning that they don't receive school funding, their coaches and referees are not paid for by the school and they don't follow country established schedules for competitions.
The Blair crew team competed in the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints on Feb. 4 at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA and the National Capital Erg Sprints on Feb. 12 at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.
The Blair crew team competed in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 20.
